Can you ever book 1st class reservations when traveling with a 2nd class rail pass?

I want to book first class travel (comfort) for my travels from Paris to Frankfurt, also going from Frankfurt to Venice because it comes with sleeping arrangements, however, my Eurail Global Pass is Youth. I am not sure if I am restricted to only making 2nd class reservations or not. I am willing to pay more to get 1st class reservations, but I do not want to waste my money if I am not allowed to go in first class in the first place. Please help with this problem, I am looking to book the reservations tonight! Thank you!

    Hi Chad,

If you're traveling with a Eurail Global Pass booked at the youth rate, since the youth rate for this pass is only offered in 2nd class, you would book your reservations for 2nd class. Otherwise, you would be charged unknown supplements locally to compensate that you only have a 2nd class pass.

If you have not yet booked your pass, and you wish to travel in 1st class on all of your trips, then I would recommend purchasing it at the regular adult rate instead of the youth rate.

However, certain night trains, including the night train from Munich to Venice (as part of an overnight connection from Frankfurt to Venice), allow passengers in possession of a 2nd class pass to book space in compartments that are considered 1st class.

The class of service for sleeping compartments on night trains is generally determined by how many people a particular compartment sleeps. Single and double compartments are generally considered 1st class, while triple compartments, 4 passenger couchettes and 6 passenger couchettes are generally considered 2nd class accommodations. Therefore, if you wish to reserve one compartment for as many as 3, 4 or 6 passengers, then you would just have to expect that it would be considered 2nd class. In that sense, you can often just disregard class of service on night trains.

The night train from Munich to Venice does allow passengers with a 2nd class rail pass to book space in Double compartments and Single compartments that would ordinarily be considered 1st class.

For travel with a pass, a reservation itself would be purchased by clicking on 'Book your Rail Pass Reservations' on our homepage, entering the route, and indicating the type of rail pass you'll be traveling with when you're prompted.

To view the type of sleeping compartments being offered on a particular overnight train, you would click the 'View' button that's listed with the reservation fees when you pull up the results of your search on our website.

For the connection from Frankfurt to Venice, you would do separate searches for each segment of the trip when you go to book your reservations. Therefore, you would do one search for trains from Frankfurt to Munich (high-speed 'InterCity Express' trains) and then another search to access the night train from Munich to Venice (a 'City Night Line' train).

If you were to book reservations in 1st class for a day connection from Paris to Frankfurt (high-speed 'TGV Est' trains), and you will only be traveling with a pass booked for 2nd class, then you would be charged an unknown supplement locally on board the train to compensate (in addition to the reservation itself). Since that is a fee that would be assessed locally, we would not have any information regarding what it could be.

    Hello,

I purchased a 2nd class Eurail Pass for Italy and accidentally purchased 1st class reservations.

What are my options? Do I need to purchase new tickets and refund the old ones?

If refund is the only option, do I need to include a letter to identify that I want a refund, or do I just send the tickets to the provided address?

Also, your call times are crazy, I was on hold over an hour, which is why I'm going here.

  • We are interested in upgrading to 1st class for the Golden pass (interlaken to montreux) and Glacier express (visp to chur). Does it make sense to buy a 2nd class flexi-pass using the 2-for-1 deal and then pay the upgrade/fare difference to upgrade to 1st class for those routes

Does it make sense for 1st class pass with 2-for-1 deal or buy 2nd class and then get upgrade later on the scenic trains?.

  • Myself and three other members of my family (one adult, and two children, aged 12 and 6) have a benelux-france eurail pass 2nd class. I want to travel from paris to nice on the overnight train, but I wanted to keep my family together in a 4-person sleeper car. When I went to book the reservation online, when I searched for 2nd class reservations, there was no opportunity to upgrade. I think I switched to search for 1st class options, and was able to secure a 4-person sleeper car. Now I'm afraid that I implied that I had a 1st class pass, and will have to pay more for the 1st class reservations on this trip. For France, is there any way to get a 1st class reservation for this overnight train (paris-nice) with a 2nd class pass?

      Hi Chloe.

On night trains in France ('Intercités de Nuit' trains), the 4 person sleeping compartments are actually considered 1st class. Therefore, if your Eurail Benelux-France Pass is for 2nd class, you would not be able to book this compartment without being charged an additional supplement to compensate. Since the additional supplement would be assessed locally, we would not have any information about how much it would be.

Even though you'll be traveling with a 2nd class rail pass, you could still purchase reservations for this compartment on our website; you would just have to expect that you'll be charged that additional supplement while you're there.

Otherwise, a 2nd class rail pass would enable you to purchase reservations for a 6 person sleeping compartment on this train, in which case you would not be charged another supplement locally.

For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase reservations for the night train from Paris to Nice by clicking on 'Book your Rail Pass Reservations' on our homepage, entering the route, and indicating the type of rail pass you'll be traveling with when you're prompted (i.e. Eurail Benelux-France Pass).

Generally, these trains can be booked once within 90 days of an intended date of departure.
