5 Bicycles July 8th - Madrid to Santander

Hello, Just want to make sure we have the correct procedure for a group of 5 bicyclists going to Santander from Madrid. What Local station in Madrid is the best to depart from? and do we need to book in advance?....bikes are fully assembled.

Thanks
M.

    Hi Mark,

Fully assembled bicycles are not allowed on the high-speed trains in Spain (AVE, Altaria, Alaris, Alvia, Arco, Avant). Most major cities in Spain are connected exclusively by high-speed trains.

Fully assembled bicycles would only be allowed on board MD (Media Distancia) and regional trains in Spain as long as maximum capacity has not been met, in which case you would need to purchase a ticket for your bicycle locally at the station.

The only possible connection from Madrid to Santander that would allow fully assembled bicycles on board would involve taking a regional 'IR' train from the Madrid Chamartin station to Palencia, where you would connect to a regional 'R' train that continues on to Santander.

Generally, you can purchase tickets by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on the homepage of our website; however, the regional 'IR' trains from Madrid to Palencia are not able to be viewed or booked there at this time. Therefore, you would purchase tickets and check schedules for this portion of the route by calling us at 1-800-622-8600.

In the meantime, you can check ticket costs and schedules for trains from Palencia to Santander under 'Find Fares & Schedules' on our site. The regional trains can be identified by their train number when you pull up the results of your search, as they will have a 5 digit train number that begins with a '1' or a '3'.

If you have not yet left for your Europe and you need to make this connection as soon as July 8th, then you would call us as soon as possible to purchase the tickets. Otherwise, your only option would be to purchase the tickets locally.
