A mini glacial-express-like route?

We'll be arriving in Zurich 23 March 2018, and in Lucerne on 28 March 2018 by way of train from Schaffhausen.

We'd like to travel from Lucerne to Chur to Brig (or Lucerne to Brig to Chur). The former shows the return from Brig to Lucerne through Bern... is there a shorter or better route to get back to Lucerne?

We'll be in Lucerne 4 days, we'd like to do this route as well as going up Jungfrau one of the days.

Thanks for any advice!

    Hi Deb,

The fastest routes from Brig to Lucerne are through Bern. The connections take just over 2 hours in duration and involve just the one train change in Bern along the way.

There are other possible options from Brig to Lucerne but they would take longer.

The gateway to Jungfraujoch is Interlaken, so another thing you can consider is hitting Jungfraujoch on your way from Brig to Lucerne. A connection from Brig to Lucerne via Interlaken would take just over 3 hours in duration (straight through) and involves 2 train changes along the way; once in Spiez and then once in Interlaken. When you reach Interlaken, you can disembark and make your trek up to Jungfraujoch. Trains from Lucerne to Interlaken all run along the famed GoldenPass scenic route and have panoramic windows for taking in the views.

Another option would be to follow the Glacier Express route back east to Andermatt, where you would connect to the Gotthard scenic route north to Lucerne. To connection to the Gotthard scenic route, you would just have to take a short regional train from Andermatt to Goeschenen. During the month of March, the Gotthard scenic route would consist of a regional train from Goeschenen to Erstfeld and another regional train from Erstfeld to Flüelen. The steamboat on Lake Lucerne is recommended as a way to get from Flüelen to Lucerne.

Otherwise, you can just take the regional train direct from Erstfeld straight to Lucerne (without stopping in Flüelen).

The connection from Brig to Flüelen via the Gotthard route takes just under 3.5 hours in duration. The boat ride from Flüelen to Lucerne on Lake Lucerne then takes about 2.5 hours.

By taking the regional train straight from Erstfeld to Lucerne, the full connection from Brig to Lucerne via the Gotthard route would take just under 4.5 hours in duration.

For an itinerary such as this, your best option would be to purchase the Swiss Travel Pass. For the Swiss Travel Pass, you would click here: http://www.raileurope.com/pass/swiss-pass-5934
