Amsterdam to Munich with a Eurail Global Pass

4 of us (2 adults, 2 youth) are travelling from Amsterdam to Munich July 5th, we all have Global passes. The website "suggests" we make a reservation -- but that will cost an additional $792 for the four of us, and we've already spend $2400 on the passes we purchased. As this is a Tuesday night -- how risky is it to just try and get on the train?

    Hi Christie,

You're looking at regular ticket costs, as opposed to passholder reservations. Since you'll be traveling with a rail pass, you would just be charged a small reservation fee for these trains.

A daytime connection from Amsterdam to Munich would take about 7.5 hours in duration and involves changing trains once along the way in either Mannheim, Cologne, Dusseldorf, or the Frankfurt Airport. These trains are ICE (InterCity Express) trains on which reservations would be highly recommended; not required.

For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase reservations by entering a route on our homepage (www.raileurope.com) and indicating the type of pass with which you'll be traveling (i.e. a 'Eurail Global Pass'). This would prompt our site to quote you passholder reservations and not full fare tickets.

To view the most possible options for a daytime option from Amsterdam to Munich, you would piece together the connection by doing a separate search for each segment (i.e. one search for trains from Amsterdam to Mannheim and another search for connecting trains from Mannheim to Munich).

There is also a direct overnight train from Amsterdam to Munich. On this train, reservations would be required in addition to the pass. The night train from Amsterdam to Munich is the 'Pollux' City Night Line train.

  • Hi Jeff, we want to travel overnight, and this is what I find when I search...

We would really like to stretch out to sleep!

      Hi Christie,

The operator for the night train from Amsterdam to Munich has actually not yet enabled ticket purchases for dates beyond May. Until they do, it would not be possible to purchase your passholder reservations for that train. It is usually the case that City Night Line trains can be booked once within 90 to 180 days of a departure, so I'd expect them to open up their availability for July very soon, hopefully at some point within the next few weeks.

I would recommend checking this route on our site periodically until you see the passholder rates appear, at which point you'll be able to purchase the reservations. When the passholder rates display, you will no longer see that yellow box with the 'Train Tickets Found' error message.

In the meantime, you can get an idea of the reservation costs by using a date some time in April or May.
