Are all the trains in Switzerland open during the winter? I will be there the end of November and beginning of December 2015.

  • Hi Margie.

Generally, trains in Switzerland operate all throughout the year, although there are a few exceptions; those exceptions being:

    - The 'Glacier Express' scenic train between Zermatt and St. Moritz. The 'Glacier Express' train doesn't operate from October 26th to December 13th.

    - The 'Bernina Express' scenic train between Tirano and St. Moritz The 'Bernina Express' between Tirano and St. Moritz doesn't operate from October 26th to May 8th. Incidentally, the 'Bernina Express' bus, which travels between Tirano and Lugano, doesn't operate from October 26th to March 27th.

    - The 'Chocolate Train' excursion between Montreux and Broc. The 'Chocolate Train' excursion doesn't run from October 30th to May 3rd.

Otherwise, you can expect trains in Switzerland to be operating at normal service.

You can check schedules and purchase tickets by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on our homepage (www.raileurope.com) and entering a route.

Generally, tickets for trains in Switzerland can only be booked within 60 days of an intended date of departure. If your intended travel happens to fall outside of this time frame, you may have to enter a date some time within the next 60 days in order to get an idea of the schedules and ticket costs for a route in the meantime.
