    Hi Ed,

With regard to your itinerary, it would be important to note that there are only a few train routes between Spain and Portugal. In fact, there are no rail lines connecting Spain and Portugal in the southern part of these countries. If you'll be coming from Seville, there are two different routes you could take to get into Portugal.

The first option would involve taking a direct train from Seville back up to Madrid, where you would switch to the overnight train that goes to Lisbon. This overnight train is the only train that runs along the rail line between Madrid and Lisbon. Since your final destination in Portugal is Lisbon, this is more than likely the option you would want to go with for travel between the two countries.

The second option involves taking a bus from Seville to the town of Faro in the Algarve region of Southern Portugal. In Faro, you would switch to a train that would take you up to Lisbon. The bus service from Seville to Faro is operated by 'Eva Bus' and 'DAMAS'. We aren't able to issue tickets for these buses, so you would have to try going directly through the vendor.

In either case, your most economical option would just be to purchase regular tickets, as opposed to the dual country rail pass for Spain and Portugal.

You would check schedules and purchase tickets by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on our homepage ( and entering a route.

If you go with the option that involves taking the train from Faro to Lisbon, it would be important to point out that these trains require reservations in addition to the tickets that we'd issue; however, the reservation portion is only able to be purchased locally at the station. Therefore, you would just go to the ticket window in the station after your bus gets in from Seville and mention that you've already purchased the ticket. The trains from Faro to Lisbon are 'InterCity' (IC) and 'Alfa Pendular' (AP) trains.

Trains from Barcelona to Madrid are high-speed 'AVE' trains.

Trains between Madrid and Seville are high-speed 'AVE' or 'Alvia' trains.

The train from Madrid to Lisbon is the 'Lusitania' overnight train.

Generally, the trains operating within Spain (Barcelona to Madrid, Madrid to Seville, and Seville to Madrid) can be booked once within 60 to 90 days of an intended date of departure.

In contrast, the night train from Madrid to Lisbon and the trains from Faro to Lisbon can only be booked within 60 days of an intended date of departure.
