  • For your travel plans I recommend the Eurail Italy - Spain Saver Pass, which will cover your travel on the trains within Spain and Italy as well as the Elipsos direct overnight train from Barcelona Estacion de France to Milan Centrale. Please keep in mind that the Elipsos only operates three days per week on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. If you are not able to take the night train from Barcelona to Milan and would need to change trains in France, you will need the 3 Country Eurail Select Pass for Spain, France and Italy.

Seat reservations will be mandatory for most of the trains for this itinerary. You can purchase the passholder reservations by using the following link http://www.raileurope.com/us/rail/poi...

Yes, Martin, the AD75 passes cover the ticket costs for travel within the countries listed on the pass, just as the regular passes do. To get from Venice to Barcelona, you would first take a train to Milan, where you would connect to the overnight train that goes to Barcelona. In the direction of Milan to Barcelona, the night train only operates Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Reservations for the night train between Milan and Barcelona might only be able to be purchased through our call center at this time. If nothing displays on our website when you do your search for this segment, then you would call us at 1-800-622-8600 to book the reservations. We do recommend that the reservations be booked as soon as possible, because accommodations on the night train can sell out very quickly. These trains generally can be booked at any point within 90 days of an intended date of departure.

excellent. Thanks. I do have a few more Q? :)
1-how much extra and what type accomodations would we have for ad75 on Night Train?.
2-we are interested also in stopping before Barcelona. We are flying to Rome and want to go Rome to Florence for the day then take night train to Venice, would we need to make reservation for Florence, or only night train to Venice? also what would be our cost$ ?
3- we are thinking of adding a side trip to Switzerland or France, we have 10days in Europe, we like to see country sites, mountains, animals; which country would you recommend?
    Thank you -
    Martin Gonzalez

    Hi Martin,

The AD75 discount is applied to the rail pass. It would not be applied to your reservations on each trip. In fact, the AD75 discount is not offered on point-to-point tickets for most trains in Europe (it is only offered on the Eurostar, which connects London with either Paris or Brussels; and also the Thalys, which connects Paris with some of the larger cities or hubs in Belgium and the Netherlands).

For a complete listing of agency discounted products, please click on the link for '75% Agency Discount' after clicking on the tab for 'Travel Agent Resources' on the homepage of our travel agent website. The eligibility requirements will be listed there as well.

In this list is the Eurail Select Pass, which is what you would choose to cover your travels, since you will now be traveling to other countries as well.

When selecting a railpass on our website, you would just want to be sure that all of the countries being traveled through are accounted for on the pass you choose. Considering this, based on the information you provided, you would purchase a 4 country Eurail Select Pass to include Italy, Switzerland, France, and Spain.

You can check reservation costs for each train by clicking on 'Reservations For Rail Pass Holders' or 'Book a Reservation for Your Pass' from the homepage of our travel agent website.

After you add the pass to your shopping cart, you would click 'Continue Shopping' to add your reservations. On the next screen, you would then click 'Buy a Reservation' under where it says 'Reservations for Pass Holders' (if starting on the homepage, you would just click on 'Reservations For Rail Pass Holders', as mentioned above).

The night train to Barcelona departs from Milan. When planning your itinerary, please just note that this night train only operates Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Also, searches to or from Barcelona require that the station name be typed out when you enter your search. For Barcelona, you would type 'Barcelona Estacio De Franca' in the destination field.

In the countries you will be traveling in, trains can only be reserved within 90 days of their respective departure dates. The trains can sell out quickly, so we recommend booking your reservations as soon as it becomes possible to do so.

As mentioned above in this message string, reservations for the night train from Milan to Barcelona might only be able to booked through our call center at 1-800-622-8600. If nothing display for that train when you do your search, then please call us to inquire about booking the reservations.

    Hi José,

The most feasible connections from Milan to Lyon pass through Switzerland en route. To take one of these connections and book the lowest possible passholder fares, Switzerland would have to be included on your pass.

Otherwise, there is an option for a connection from Milan to Lyon that would involve just one train change in Chambery along the way. The train from Milan to Chambery goes right from Italy into France, so you would not pass through Switzerland in this case. Generally, you would be able to purchase reservations for this train under 'Book a Reservation for Your Pass' on the homepage of our website, however, reservations on this particular train are not able to be booked there at this time, due to an error. If you were to do a search for trains from Milan to Chamber under 'Book a Reservation for Your Pass', an error message may display that states the "reservations are are unavailable or sold out at this time, or your rail pass is not valid for the reservations on this route". Rest assured, that this is most likely not the case and the reservations may still be available. To book reservations for this train, you would call us at 1-800-622-8600.

The connecting trains from Chambery to Lyon are regional trains that do not accept reservations, so the rail pass is all you would need to board. For planning purposes, you can just view the schedules for such routes by entering the cities under 'Check Fares and Schedules' on the homepage of our website and clicking the option to 'Check Schedules'.

The only other alternative would involve going down through Nice before heading up to Lyon. Such a connection would involve at least 2 train changes along the way; once in Ventimiglia and then once in Nice.

Trains from Milan to Ventimiglia would require reservations. Trains from Ventimiglia to Nice are regional trains that do not accept reservations, so the rail pass is all you would need to board. Trains from Nice to Lyon require reservations.

For planning, you can just view schedules by entering the requested cities under 'Check Fares and Schedules' on the homepage of our website and clicking the option to 'Check Schedules'. To do this, you would have to search each segment of the connection individually, so you would do one search for trains from Milan to Ventimiglia, another search for trains from Ventimiglia to Nice and another search for trains from Nice to Lyon.

To make your actual reservations on the trains from Milan to Ventimiglia and from Nice to Lyon, you would click on 'Book a Reservation for Your Pass' on the homepage.

Reservable trains in France and Italy can be booked within 90 days of an intended date of departure.

      Hi Raju,

Any information we provide would depend on your destination in Italy. Where in Italy do you wish to visit?

      To give you an example:

A rail connection from Barcelona to Rome would take at least 21 hours in duration and would involve at least 5 train changes along the way; once in Figueras, once in Narbonne, once in Aix en Provence, once in Ventimiglia, and then once in Genoa. The final segment from Genoa to Rome would be on an overnight train.

A rail connection from Rome back to Barcelona would take at least 21 hours in duration and would involve at least 4 train changes along the way; once in Milan, once in Geneva, once in Valence, and the once in Figueras. The first segment from Rome to Milan would be on an overnight train.

You can purchase tickets and check schedules by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com. For each of these routes, you would piece together the connection by doing a separate search for each segment (i.e. one search for trains from Barcelona to Figueras, another search for connecting trains from Figueras to Narbonne, another search for connecting trains from Narbonne to Aix en Provence, another search for connecting trains from Aix en Provence to Ventimiglia, another search for connecting trains from Ventimiglia to Genoa, and another search to access the night train from Genoa to Rome).

Trains between Figueras and Barcelona are only able to be booked within 60 days of an intended date of departure date, while each of the other trains comprising of these connections is able to be booked within 90 days of an intended date of departure.

  • Hello,

I would like to travel from Venice to Barcelona. It is my understanding that the train from milan to barcelona is no longer operational. Is there another way to go? Should I be looking into using a Ferry?

Thank you for your help, I plan on traveling in min September 2013.
    • Jeff (Official Rep) August 01, 2013 15:18
      Hi Nomi,

It's correct that the night train from Milan to Barcelona is no longer operating. This service was discontinued some time last year. Without overnighting somewhere along the way, the most feasible connection all the way through from Venice to Barcelona would now involve 6 train changes and take just over 15 hours in duration. The train changes would be in Bologna, Milan, Turin, Bourg en Bresse, Valence, and Figueras.

You can purchase tickets and check schedules by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com. For this route, you would piece together the connection by doing a separate search for each segment. Therefore, you would do one search for trains from Venice to Bologna, another search for trains from Bologna to Milan, another search for trains from Milan to Turin, another search for trains from Turin to Bourg en Bresse, another search for trains from Bourg en Bresse to Valence, another search for trains from Valence to Figueras, and then another search for trains from Figueras to Barcelona.

Each of the trains comprising of this connection generally can be booked within 90 days of an intended date of departure, with the exception of trains from Figueras to Barcelona, which can only be booked within 60 days of an intended date of departure.

There is a ferry from Civitavecchia (the port outside of Rome) to Barcelona, so another option would be to take the train down to there so that you can take this ferry. You can refer to 'Find Fares & Schedules' to purchase tickets for a rail connection from Venice to Civitavecchia (which would just involve a train change in Rome along the way). Tickets for the ferry to Barcelona would be purchased locally. The ferry operator is 'Grimaldi Lines'.

I am trying to go from Barcelona to Rome to Paris and then back to Barcelona. It can be Barcelona to Paris to Rome and then back to Barcelona. I understand there are not direct trains to do this so I am trying to figure out which ones to take. I am not familiar with Rail Europe so am a little confused. Thanks.
