Can I take my bicycle on a train from Madrid to Salamanca?

To start my bike tour I need to take the train from Madrid Chamartin to Salamanca. The bike will be fully loaded for touring (40 kg) with front and rear paniers. Is there room to store the bike at the end of the car? Will I need to carry it up stairs?

Thank you for your question, Rick.

In Spain, fully assembled bicycles would only be allowed on board 'Media Distancia' (MD) trains and other regional trains (fully assembled bicycles would not be allowed on board the high-speed trains in Spain). Conveniently, the trains that connect Madrid and Salamanca do happen to be Media Distancia trains, so you will be able to take your bicycle on board still fully assembled.

On Media Distancia trains, one bicycle is allowed per person; however, passengers traveling in a group with 3 or more bicycles must receive authorization from 'Renfe-Operadora' before boarding. If a particular Media Distancia train is at maximum capacity, you may end up having to purchase a special ticket for your bike, which you would have to do locally.

You would purchase your tickets and check schedules for trains from Madrid to Salamanca by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on our homepage and entering the cities.

The trains from Madrid to Salamanca depart from the Madrid Chamartin station in Madrid, which is one level. The station in Salamanca is also just one level. Therefore, you would need to carry your bike up any stairs.
