Are bicycles on trains in Spain? I need to get from Barcelona Airport into the city & then to Figueres. Do I need a special reservation for my bicycle?

Are bicycles allowed on trains in Spain? I need to use the renfe to get from the Barcelona airport (BCN) and then other trains to get to Figueres. Do I need special reservations for bicycles? How do I make the reservations?

Thank you for your question, William.

In Spain, fully assembled bicycles are only allowed on board 'Media Distancia' (MD)* and other regional trains.

Conveniently, there are 'Media Distancia' trains that connect Barcelona and Figueres. Therefore, you would be able to take your bike on one of these trains and keep it assembled. If the train is at maximum capacity, however, you may end up having to purchase a special ticket for your bike. I believe the bike ticket would be about 3 or 4 euros, and you would just purchase it at the station prior to boarding. General tickets for boarding a Media Distancia train from Barcelona to Figueres are also only able to be purchased locally.

Please note, fully assembled bicycles are not allowed on the high-speed trains in Spain (AVE, Altaria, Alaris, Alvia, Arco, Avant). There are AVE and Avant trains that run from Barcelona to Figueres, along with the Media Distancia trains. If you want to take one of the AVE or Avant trains to get from Barcelona to Figueres, your bike would have to be contained within a purpose-designed bicycle bag (measuring no more than 120cm x 90cm). A bike can fit in such a bag with the wheels and pedals detached and the handlebars parallel to the frame. There would be no charge to transport a bike in such a bag.

Unlike the Media Distancia trains from Barcelona to Figueres, tickets for the AVE and Avant trains are able to be purchased on our website. To purchase tickets for an AVE or Avant train from Barcelona to Figueres, you would click on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on our homepage and enter the route.

To get from the Barcelona El Prat Airport into the city, you would take a local 'C2' Cercanias train. These trains depart once every 30 minutes throughout the day and the ride takes about 20 to 25 minutes between the airport and the Sants station (the main rail station in Barcelona). You can take a fully assembled bike on board one of these trains, however, they may impose some restrictions to that during rush hour periods.

*On Media Distancia trains, one bicycle is allowed per person; however, passengers traveling in a group with more than 3 bicycles must receive authorization from 'Renfe-Operadora' before boarding.

  • Does the Media Distancia train to Figueres leave from the Sants Station? The map of the MD trains did not mention the name of station used in Barcelona.
Thank you for the first reply. It was very helpful

You're welcome, William. Yes, the Media Distancia trains to Figueres do depart from the Barcelona Sants station.

  • What kind of bag would be required to carry a bike? Does it need to be a bike box or can it be carried in a simple black cloth type bag? Thanks.
