Change in reply by Jeff to Hi Katy,

It is true that in Spain fully assembled bicycles are only allowed on board MD (Media Distancia) and other regional trains.

Not only will the MD (Media Distancia) and regional trains generally be slower than other trains, but they also do not operate every route. For example, there is no way to connect from Santiago de Compostela to San Sebastián by MD or regional trains. As a result, there is no way to travel with an assembled bike between Santiago de Compostela and San Sebastián.

From Santiago de Compostela to San Sebastián, there is a direct IC (InterCity) train. On this train, your bike would have to be transported in a purpose-designed bicycle bag (measuring no more than 120cm x 90cm). A bike can fit in such a bag with the wheels and pedals detached and the handlebars parallel to the frame.

Tickets for the IC train from Santiago de Compostela to San Sebastián can be purchased by searching the route under 'Find Train Tickets' on our homepage, www.raileurope.com. Generally, trains in Spain can be booked once within 90 days of an intended departure date.

There are direct MD trains between San Sebastián and Madrid, on which you would be able to take a fully assembled bicycle. The MD trains between San Sebastián and Madrid are not able to be viewed or booked on our website. If you'd like to book tickets for an MD train on this route, you would have to call us. We can be reached at 1-800-622-8600. Our current hours are 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM CT Monday to Friday and 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM CT on Saturdays.

On MD trains, there is sometimes a limit of 2 bikes per train, so it always best to check locally. Also, the cost to take an assembled bike on board these trains is €3..
