Bikes: Spain to Bilbao

I am traveling to Spain in April for a bike tour and am curious for more information regarding bringing bicycles onto trains. Is it possible to bring fully assembled bikes on the train from Madrid to Bilbao? If so, what is the process for reserving the space for our bikes?

Thanks so much for your help!

In Spain, fully assembled bicycles are only allowed on board 'MD' (Media Distancia) and other regional trains. However, there aren't any such trains operating direct from Madrid to Bilbao. You can take an MD train from Madrid to the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz, which is still about 62 km (driving distance) from Bilbao. From Vitoria-Gasteiz, you could ride or maybe try and find another form of transportation to get to Bilbao.

You would purchase tickets for a train from Madrid to Vitoria-Gasteiz by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on our homepage ( and entering the route. When doing your search, you would just type 'Vitoria' in the field for the arrival city.

Generally, trains in Spain can only be booked once within 60 to 90 days of an intended date of departure. Currently, the MD trains from Madrid to Vitoria-Gasteiz can only be booked for dates up until April 3rd.

Miranda de Ebro is another stop along this route where you could disembark; however, Miranda de Ebro is about 83 km (driving distance) from Bilbao.

*On the MD trains, you can take your bike on board at no extra cost. One bicycle is allowed per person; however, passengers traveling in a group with more than 3 bicycles must receive authorization from 'Renfe-Operadora' before boarding.
