Flying into Madrid & taking a train to Seville

The day I fly into Madrid I would like to take a train to Seville. However, I'm not sure what time to book, how much time to allow, or if my flight will be on time. Will it be a problem not to book anything ahead of time? Travel will take place in October. Thanks

    Hi Shelley.

In Madrid, there are direct 'Cercanías' trains that go from the Barajas Airport to the Atocha Cercanías station on Line C-1. Atocha Cercanías is adjacent to the Puerta de Atocha station, which is the main station in Madrid where most trains to elsewhere in Spain will depart from, including trains to Seville. The Cercanías trains from the airport to Atocha Cercanías depart once every 30 minutes throughout the day and the ride takes about 26 minutes in duration. You would pay to board these Cercanías trains locally upon arrival.

It is generally recommended that tickets be purchased in advance, prior to departing for Europe.

You would purchase tickets from Madrid to Seville by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on the homepage of the Rail Europe website ( and entering the route. Trains from Madrid to Seville are high-speed 'AVE' or 'Alvia' trains. Generally, trains in Spain can be booked once within 60 to 90 days of an intended date of departure.
