    Hi Kristina,

The Glacier Express is a very popular train that sells out very quickly. Therefore, I would strongly recommend booking reservations for it well in advance prior to departing for Europe. Otherwise, it will more than likely be sold out when you get to Europe.

The Glacier Express can be booked within 90 days of an intended date of departure. If you'll be traveling with a rail pass, you can book your reservations for the Glacier Express by clicking on 'Book your Rail Pass Reservations' on the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com.

If you will be traveling with a Eurail Select Pass, Eurail Global Pass or any other multiple country pass that includes Switzerland, then the portion of this route between Zermatt and Disentis would not be covered. If this is the case, you would just also have to purchase the 'Glacier Express Eurail Passholder Fare' ticket in addition to the rail pass and your reservations, so that the ticket costs for this portion can be covered. You can purchase this ticket by clicking here: http://www.raileurope.com/activities/glacier-express-eurail-passholder-fare/index.html.

If you'll be traveling with a Swiss Pass, then the full route of the Glacier Express between Zermatt and St. Moritz would be covered, so you would not need to purchase the 'Glacier Express Eurail Passholder Fare' ticket.

If you will not be traveling with a rail pass while you're in Switzerland, you would purchase regular point-to-point tickets for the Glacier Express. To do so, you would click on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on our homepage (instead of 'Book your Rail Pass Reservations') and not mention that you'll be traveling with any rail pass. The reservation would automatically be included with any ticket purchase for this train.

      Update:

Starting in 2017, a multi-country rail pass that includes Switzerland (Eurail Select Pass or Eurail Global Pass) will begin covering ticket costs for the stretch of railway on the Glacier Express line between Zermatt and Disentis. Therefore, the 'Glacier Express Eurail Passholder Fare' ticket would no longer be necessary to cover this segment.

Seat reservations would still be necessary for the actual Glacier Express train itself going the full route from Zermatt to St Moritz (to go along with a rail pass).

  • Am staying in Stuttgart and want to travel into Switzerland, more for the scenery than anything else. Have read about the Glacier Express. Some questions....

Would a regional Germany/Swiss pass cover the cost of this train?
Can you get on and off the Glacier Express along the route? ( I would like to board in St. Moritz, and get off at Andermatt)
Does a train go from Stuttgart to St. Moritz that is covered by the Germany/Swiss regional pass?
Does a train go from Andermatt to Stuttgart, that is covered by the Germany/Swiss regional pass?

Will be in Stuttgart for 20 days...the more I reasearch, the more I think I will travel mostly in Germany(day trips) and perhaps the Glacier Express trip. What would be best?

  • 19 May staying in Brig overnight. On 20 May wish to take train from Brig to Landquart. We are buying the 8 day German-Swiss Eurail pass. Is the Brig to Disentis part of trip on Glacier Express covered? or is it a separate ticket?

Also, on 21 May will take Bernin-Express from Landquart to Tirano to Chur to Liestal. Is this covered on the German-Swiss Eurail pass?....and does going to Tirano count as a 3rd country?

    THANKS!

  • I have a Swiss Saver flexi pass 2nd class, and am trying to book reservations for the Glacier Express. Is there a way to pick my seats? Can I upgrade to first class? So far all I've found is a random reservation. Also Rail Europe is more expensive to make a reservation than GlacierExpress.com...why is that?

  • I’m undecided
I have a group of 6 in Innsbruck and want to use the Glacier Express part way to Interlaken. Is this possible? Or do I need to go through Zurich and Bern?

They have 4 nights in Switzerland and I wanted them to take the Glacier Express, do the Jungfraujoch one day, then to Zermatt, then back over to Venice. Any suggestions. They have a Eurail Global pass.

  • Hi, I wish to go on a Europe tour with my wife in October. I wish to visit Switzerland (6 days) & Italy (5 days). I can have a couple of days to add. Which Eurail pass would suit me? Does it provide free travel on scenic trains? I wish to travel from Lucerne to Lugano & probably also the Glacier Express.

While you are entering Italy from Switzerland, how does the stamping of Italy pass (if I have one) take place? Any tips for travel from Pisa to Rome? Any suggestions?

  • Hi,

My husband, our 9 year old daughter and I are flying to Munich at the end of June, we will spend our 16 day holidays mostly in Switzerland but with start and end at Munich.

We will begin with one night in the center of city of Munich, then St. Moritz 2 nights, Zermatt 2 nights, Montreux 3 nights and Luzern Lake area for 5 nights, and then end with 2 nights in Munich before flighting back to US.

Now I am trying to figure out if 10 days Euro train Pass German +Swizerland is sufficient for our travel plan? What is the best way to travel from the Munich Int'l airport to the City center (train or bus or taxi)? should we buy seperate tickets for from and back to airport? Do Glacier Express, Gloden Pass Line and Bernina Express cover by the two country train passes? If there is any need to buy another 4 day Swiss Pass in addition to the 10 day passes?

Any input will be grately appreciated!

    WW

  • We are planning a family vacation this fall and my 7yo son loves trains, so that will be an important part of the experience for him. The Glacier Express, which runs from Chur to Zermatt, shows up at the bahn.de site as having several intermediate stops including Brig where we can catch a train south to Italy. Are you allowed to disembark the Glacier Express at an intermediate stop? Many thanks!
