I want to reserve a seat from Berlin to Amsterdam. Is this possible to do with the German Rail Pass? I was able to do so in raileurope-world.com, but not raileurope.com... With raileurope.com I get the train information, but a message that says "This train requires travelers with a rail pass to purchase a reservation but we are unable to find reservations that are compatible with your rail pass for this train."

I am now confused whether is it possible or not... please help. Info on the train in question: BERLIN HBF To AMSTERDAM CS - Train 148

  • We are a family of 4 traveling to Spain for one week. Will purchase the 3 or 4 day Eurail Spain pass. We will have one long AVE trip from Barcelona to Madrid, and then a couple day trips out of Madrid. How much will the AVE trip cost with the pass? And will the other day trips be 100% paid for or do we still pay for "reservations" but not the full fare? Thank you.

How do I book reservations for those trains that require them when it says " we can't find reservations compatible with your pass"? I have the Eurail Select 3 countries pass and I am trying to go to Marseille from Paris on 12/26 (which is coming up soon so I'm freaking out!). Thanks, Amy

Recently I bought a Eurail Regional Pass for France and Italy. I tried to reservate using the online tool but it doesn't show the search results. Only a waiting page is displayed. Are technical problems? Are other way to doy reservations for customers in Mexico?

I would like to travel to Germany, Austria, and Italy so I was going to purchase the Select Pass. I read online that if I want to take a train from Berlin to Vienna than I would also have to purchase a pass that goes through the Czech Republic. Is this true?

I have an Eurail Global Pass and I was trying to make a reservation from Paris Est to Prague hl.n. through your page. When I use the timetable that Eurail sent me with my pass, it says that there is an ICE train leaving at 19:06 and arrives at 22:17 in Mannheim Hbf for my first stop. If I use your page to make a reservation the only train option at that time is with TGV, which is not an option in the timetable. Am I doing something wrong?

If you have a benelux pass, and you want to take the tgv in france, I know you have to "buy a seat reservation" but what does that mean exactly? Does it mean that you pay more? Or that you somehow use a number from the pass to make a seat reservation on a TGV? This is for late July, early August, btw. Thanks.

    Purchasing a 30-day Rail Pass.

We have a group traveling to Europe (September, 2014) and want to purchase the 30-day Eurorail Global Pass. I understand that we will need to make reservations in advance for several of the trains between Germany, France, and Italy - but will there be additional costs for those trains, if we purchase the First-Class priced Global Pass? Will it work on the TGV & ICE trains without additional fees? What about overnight trains? Thank you for any assistance, we do have plenty of time to plan so we want to research every possibility.

  • Yes, a number of routes require reservations. There are additional charges, some only a few Euros, but some quite expensive, e.g. From Paris to parts of Germany. My recall, is that the reservation was in excess of 100 euros, as much as the individual ticket would have cost without the pass.
Other routes may not require reservations, but for a group of your size it might be a good idea. Typically we had not made too many advance reservations but are doing so more of late. Two years ago we were taking a night train from Heidelberg to Copenhagen. We tried to make a reservation a week in advance and found it was sold out. Had to take a day train, a day later than planned.

  • Where in your reservation tool can I see what type of train we're taking. I don't want to make reservations if they aren't needed. We have the German Rail Pass Promotion that requires reservations on ICE, IC, EC, RJ, TGV, CNL, EN, D trains and IC buses. I don't know what these acronyms mean and I don't see a place on the tool that specifies train types. Please help! I don't want to be fined or break any rules.
    • Jeff (Official Rep) July 21, 2014 18:26
      Hi Jennifer,

For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase any reservations by clicking on 'Book your Rail Pass Reservations' on the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com. When you pull up the results of a search on our site, some train types will be labeled, but others will not be.

ICE stands for 'InterCity Express', which is the high-speed train that operates within Germany. The InterCity Express is the one high-speed 'Premier' train in Europe that doesn't require reservations; however, it is still highly recommended that reservations be purchased on these trains.

IC stands for 'InterCity'. The only IC trains that require reservations are the ones that operate within Italy. Reservations are accepted on most of the IC trains that operate within Germany but not at all necessary. The IC trains that operate in Belgium and the Netherlands do not even accept reservations. Some IC trains in Switzerland might accept reservations but they are never necessary.

EC stands for 'EuroCity'. Reservations aren't required on most EuroCity trains but are highly recommended. The only EuroCity trains that require reservations are the ones that operate internationally between a city in Italy and a city in either Germany or Switzerland.

RJ stands for 'Railjet', which is a train that connects certain major rail hubs in Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Switzerland (most notably Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Zurich, Salzburg, and Innsbruck). Reservations aren't required on Railjet trains but are highly recommended.

TGV, which stands for 'Train à Grande Vitesse', is the name of the high-speed train that operates within France, though there are different variations of these trains that operate internationally between France and certain rail hubs in Switzerland, Italy, Germany, and Belgium. Reservations are required on all TGV trains.

CNL stands for 'City Night Line', which is a type of overnight train that connects certain rail hubs in much of Central Europe (most notably cities that include Amsterdam, Zurich, Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich, Rome, Florence, Prague, and Copenhagen). EN stands for 'EuroNight', which is another type of overnight train that operates throughout much of Central and Eastern Europe. Reservations are required on all overnight trains, including the City Night Line and EuroNight trains.

D is just a generic designation used to refer to any direct long-distance trains that aren't really any particular brand. Trains identified as such would generally not require reservations.

IC Bus stands for 'InterCity Bus', which is a type of bus that has begun operating along certain routes in Germany, as well as some international routes between Germany and certain destinations in surrounding countries, including Prague, Zurich, Krakow, Luxembourg, Antwerp, Ljubljana, and Zagreb. Reservations are required on IC Buses.

If a particular train displays with a cost when you do a search under 'Book your Rail Pass Reservations' on our website, it would be one indicator that you might want to purchase reservations on that train. If a particular train doesn't display from such a search, then it is likely that the train doesn't accept reservations or else reservations are not necessary. If you have questions regarding a specific train, please let us know.

  • I am already in Spain and I have my 4 day select pass for Spain, France, Italy and Germany. How do I make reservations for my trip to Italy in November? I already went to the train station in Granada, and they told me that they can ́t reserve trains to Italy from there. I also tried making reservations online but raileurope can ́t mail me the reservations apparently.

I would appreciate a quick response.

    Thank you!
    • Jeff (Official Rep) October 06, 2014 21:06
      Hi Ronnie,

There is no one train from Spain to Italy. The most feasible connection from Granada to Milan, for instance, would take 24.5 hours in duration and involve 3 train changes en route; once in Barcelona, once in Valence, and then once in Chambery. The segment from Granada to Barcelona would be on an overnight train.

In Granada, they would be able to sell you passholder reservations for the train that departs out of Granada and possibly also for connecting trains from Barcelona to Valence but probably not for the rest of the trains that comprise of the connection.

We are the United States-based seller of European tickets and passes for North American countries, and many of our reservations and tickets are physical documents that would have to be shipped to you. Passholder reservations for the night train from Granada to Barcelona are only able to be issued as paper documents that would have to be shipped to you, as would be passholder reservations for the connecting train from Barcelona to Valence. However, as I alluded to above, you would likely be able to purchase reservations for both of these trains at the station in Granada (and definitely for the night train from Granada to Barcelona).

Trains from Valence to Chambery are regional trains that don't even accept reservations, so the rail pass is all you would need to board and there would be nothing to book to take one of these trains.

Passholder reservations for the train from Chambery to Milan are able to be issued as 'print-at-station' reservations. Therefore, you would be able to purchase your reservations for this train on our website and opt for them to be issued as such, so that you can print them out from a kiosk at the station in Chambery upon your arrival there. You would purchase passholder reservations for the segment from Chambery to Milan by clicking on 'Book your Rail Pass Reservations' on our homepage and indicating the type of rail pass you'll be traveling with when prompted.

The option to have the reservations issued as print-at-station reservations would be presented to you at Step 1 of the checkout process, which is the 'Delivery' screen.

Passholder reservations for any reservable trains operating within Italy should then be able to issued as 'print-at-home' reservations, so you would likely be able to purchase these through our site as well, even though you're already in Spain.
