    Hi Madeleine,

A rail pass covers the ticket costs on trains between different cities in the country or countries included on the pass. When applicable, reservations are a supplementary cost to a rail pass, just as they would be factored into the cost of individual point-to-point tickets (therefore, a rail pass still often works out to be the most economical option for travelers taking multiple trains while in Europe that cover more substantial distances).

Reservations are required on all high-speed trains, night trains, and many international routes. Generally, high-speed trains connect most of the larger cities and more popular destinations in western Europe.

After you add the pass to your shopping cart, you would click 'Continue Shopping' to add your reservations for any reservable trains and check reservation costs. On the next screen, you would then click 'Buy a Reservation' under where it says 'Reservations for Pass Holders' (if starting on the homepage, you would just click on 'Book a Reservation for Your Pass').

Most trains in Europe can only be reserved within 60 or sometimes 90 days of an intended date of departure. If your intended date of travel happens to fall outside of this time frame, then you would just enter a date within the next 60 or 90 days to get an idea of the reservation cost and/or view schedules when searching a route on our website.

To use your rail pass, you would need to have it validated by an official at the rail station before you use it for the first time. Once you've done this, you would then just be able to take it right board each train with you, along with any of your reservations.

While a rail pass will generally cover any rail line between different cities in the country or countries included on the pass, there are 3 notable exceptions that would not be covered by any 'Eurail' pass. These are the privately owned and operated 'Circumvesuviana' line that connects Naples with the Amalfi Coast (Sorrento and the Pompei ruins), the Thello night train between Paris and either Milan or Venice, and the portion of the Glacier Express scenic route in Switzerland between the towns of Disentis and Zermatt (although this would be covered by a single country Swiss Pass). Other than these, you can expect a rail pass will cover the ticket costs for travel between different cities in Europe.

In general, most railpasses do not include subway networks and bus service within a city (though the Swiss Pass is an exception once again, as it does cover travel on the city transit systems in cities throughout Switzerland).

I have a Eurail select pass for 5 countries (Austria, Benelux, Czech Republic, Frand and Germany. I want to make a reservation from Amsterdam to Paris. Why does it seem like the ticket is more expensive ($91) when I say I have a pass. If I do not not say I have a pass the ticket is ($69). I have a Youth Eurail pass (22 yrs old).

Even though we have already received Eurail Select passes that have travel for 5 days (over 2 months) for 4 countries, the website will not let me put in more than 4 segments of travel at once. Shall I just book one segment at a time and then go back and book the other segments separately? The website will also not let you navigate at all without putting in all the appropriate countries in at the beginning of trying to book reservations. Is anyone out there able to clarify the reservations system? I've tried to call 4 times today and each time have been on hold for over 30 minutes, finally giving up trying to reach any help by phone...

  • I am trying to book seat reservations for a Germany-Switzerland rail pass, but I don't understand how to tell if a train requires a seat reservation. For some lags of the trip I get the message "Our online rail system can't find tickets and schedules for this trip." Does that mean that no seat reservation is requires? Because the trip itself does exist if you look it up under regular tickets.

    1
I have been reading through this blog and am concerned that, once I get to Europe, I am going to have a problem with any additional travel that I may want to take. It sounds as if I can only travel what I already have reservations for unless it is a local train that does not accept reservations. Is that true? Will I be able to go to a train station and purchase a reservation just by showing my Eurail pass?

From past traveling in Belgium, I know we won't need reservations for some train trips, but for others (in Germany) we don't know if we do. Can we make reservations for only certain days/trips of our pass? (We definitely want to catch a morning train June 25 from Cologne to Hanover, so should we reserve it?). • I'm planning a trip w/ my boyfriend to France and Italy in August. We've already planned on purchasing the France/Italy pass with 5 days of travel in 2 months. Now, the question we have is: when/how do we go about booking the actual trains? We know the dates on which we want to travel to each city. Do we reserve each individual train once we're in the country, a few days before we know we want to leave? Is reserving really worth it, or is it likely that a train will have open seats if we don't reserve?

  • Hello,

I have a Eurail Global Youth pass, and I am attempting to book reservations to get from Florence to Nice. There are two transfers, stopping at Milano Centrale and Ventimiglia Stazi heading to Nice Riquier.

At the online checkout, for the train going from Ventimiglia Stazi to Nice Riquier, I dont see anywhere where is states "Reservation Included". The train is TER #86052. It says on the previous page that reservation is required. I just want to make sure that the reservations for all trains and all transfers will be shipped to me.

I have the order sitting in checkout right now, waiting to confirm the order until I am sure I will be getting all reservations for all trains.

    Thank you

  • Looking into a railpass versus individual tickets for 3 of us (2 adults, 1 -8-year-old) in July and decided to try to test out making a railpass reservation on a trip from Gent to Amsterdam. I keep getting this message: This train requires the pass holder to purchase a seat reservation; however the reservations are unavailable or sold out at this time, or your rail pass is not valid for the reservations on this route. You can still travel on this train with a regular ticket.

Does that mean I can't use a railpass on this trip or the website just won't let me book it now? We're going on to Germany and France after Amsterdam, so it seems like a railpass is the way to go. But maybe I'm better off buying individual tickets?

    Thanks!

We bought two EURAIL Select Passes, 5 countries 11 day promotion passes. and are traveling France, Benelux, Germany, Italy, Spain. We need to reserve our train from Paris Nord to Brussels Midi/Zuid today or tomorrow and we leave in 3 days.

  • I’m confused
I have a Eurail first class global pass and was told that with a first class pass I wouldn't need to reserve seats. However I'm finding that train stations are saying I do but these reservations are proving to be quiet expensive considering I've already paid for the Eurail pass... Has anyone else come across this? Should I just be trying my luck and hopping on a train without a reservation and with only my Eurail pass(so no ticket)?

So far I've gone from Paris, Barcelona and Milan... Costs to reserve seem to be around $100-150 usd which is around the same price for an economy ticket. I understand different comfort levels but I can't see the value of the pass at present with such high reservation fees that seem to be compulsory or highly recommended...

Would love some help on this... Thanks

We can't reserve ahead of time as were not sure when we will be at each place or for how long we'll stay , so if we just show up at the station will we have a hard time getting a seat without reservations.? Also, we don't speak any Italian will we have much trouble communicating at the rail stations?

  • I'm planning on travelling from Rome -> Venice -> Marseille -> Paris, is it a good idea to get the 4 day France - Italy pass? Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do in these cities and how many days I should stay in each? Are there direct trains to/from each city?

Also, if I were to get the pass, the reservation fees aren't included, correct? Do these trains I'm looking to get on need reservation? How much are they usually?

  • I’m confused!
I'm planning to get a 1st class Eurail Select Pass for 3 countries, for my upcoming trip. I'm trying to figure out how much more I will need to pay for the reservation of the trips I'll be making, and I noticed that I get prices for different classes. Can I book a different class from the one on my ticket?

For example, I was looking to travel from Strasbourg to Köln, and I got that, for that specific leg I could book a reservation for $31 in 2nd class and $55 in 1st class. My question is, Could I get away with reserving in 2nd class if my pass is a 1st class pass?

    Thanks in advance.

  • I'm planning a trip with my son in the summer of 2013. I'd like to travel 1st class and I'm wondering about an overnight trip from Rome to Paris. Is there an additional fee for sleeping quarters? How far in advance can I reserve an overnight train? I am confused by some of the posts that I am reading here that indicate that there are additional reservation fees. I thought that the eurail pass covered all travel by rail for the number of days and the number of countries chosen. Would you please explain this.

  • Hey just returned from eurail pass trip. Yes confusing learned this. Reservations not necessary on trains when traveling with pass. yes they cost and are not cheap. Reservations may be helpful on busy routes and direct city to city lines. Summer is busiest season so keep that in mind.

Not sure but imagine there is definitely fee and reservations needed for sleeping quarters.

We spent $250 each for 3 reserved trips Swiss city to city, Basel-Paris and Paris -Amsterdam. For last 2 were very glad to have resevations esp as paris to amsterdam was quite full. Local trains take longer more stops.

Website was helpful and phone customer service may be also. It took me a few hours to figure best option. Good luck

  • I'm having trouble understanding the rail pass. Will there be an additional charge when I make reservations? Can I travel from Amsterdam to Vienna? How much more would a sleeper cost. I think that's it, oh yes, could it be cheaper just to buy tickets from a station?
    Thanks
