I’m eager to know.

Is it ok to bring our bikes on the train from Copenhagen to Puttgarden? Do we have to pay extra or does it count as luggage?

We're four friends who wants to go from Copenhagen to Puttgarden by train to start biking from there. Is it OK to bring our bikes on the train? Do we have to pay extra or does it count as luggage?

    Hi Konrad.

The direct trains from Copenhagen to Puttgarden are 'InterCity Express' (ICE) trains; however, assembled bicycles are not allowed on board 'InterCity Express' trains. A bicycle can only be taken on board such a train if contained within a purpose-designed bicycle bag (measuring no more than 120cm x 90cm). A bike can fit in such a bag with the wheels and pedals detached and the handlebars parallel to the frame. There would be no charge to transport a bike in such a bag. The 'InterCity Express' trains are high-speed and the ride from Copenhagen to Puttgarden only takes about 3 hours.

Otherwise, if you were to travel with your bike fully assembled, you would have to take a combination of regional trains and regular 'InterCity' (IC) trains on which this would be permissible. Such a connection from Copenhagen to Puttgarden would take about 11 hours in duration and involves 4 train changes along the way; once in Fredericia, once in Flensburg, once in Kiel, and then once in Lübeck. To take your assembled bike on these trains, you would have to purchase a special bicycle ticket. This bicycle ticket can be purchased at the station in Copenhagen before departure. Since the bicycle tickets are issued locally, we would not have any information about how much they would charge. I believe these fee can range anywhere from 3 to 10 euros.

Of the trains comprising of this connection that would allow fully assembled bicycles, only the trains for the first segment, from Copenhagen to Fredericia, would be able to be purchased on our website. Therefore, you can check ticket costs and schedules for this segment of the connection by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on our homepage and entering the cities. With that said, tickets for trains from Fredericia to Flensburg, Flensburg to Kiel, and Lübeck to Puttgarden can only be purchased by calling us. Therefore, you would have to call us in order to check ticket costs and schedules for these legs of the connection. You can reach us at 1-800-622-8600. There is currently no way to purchase tickets for the Kiel-Lübeck segment from anywhere outside of Europe. You can call us in order to inquire about the schedules for trains from Kiel to Lübeck, but we would not have any information about the ticket costs.
