Bucharest to Krakow with a Eurail Global Pass

My wife and I want to travel by train from Bucharest to Krakow next April. We will be traveling with a Global Pass. I understand that I can't make reservations until January, however I need to reserve my hotels now on either end of this trip. I see a couple of schedules when I look this up on your search engine (which seems to keep changing departure times) and I know that I need to switch trains in Budapest. My question is: What trains are available from Bucharest to Budapest leaving on a weekday (Train #72 ?) and can I purchase a sleeping car reservation for a two person compartment with Rail Europe from Budapest to Krakow or Bucharest to Budapest (depending on the departure times)?

    Hi Scott,

For the Eurail Global Pass, you would click here: https://www.raileurope.com/rail-tickets-passes/eurail-global-pass/index.html.

The most feasible connection form Bucharest to Krakow takes just under 29 hours in duration and involves 3 train changes along the way; once in Budapest, once in Breclav, and then once in Katowice. The segment from Bucharest to Budapest would be an overnight train (Dacia night train).

All night trains require reservations as a supplement to a rail pass. Therefore, on the night train from Bucharest to Budapest, you would need to book reservations.

On the trains from Budapest to Breclav and Breclav to Katowice, reservations are not required, but they are highly recommended. Trains from Budapest to Breclav and Breclav to Katowice are EC (EuroCity) trains.

For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase reservations for the night train from Bucharest to Budapest and also trains from Budapest to Breclav by clicking the 'Seat Reservations' tab on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), entering the route, and indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling (i.e. a 'Eurail Global Pass'). You would do one search to access the night train from Bucharest to Budapest and then another search for connecting trains from Budapest to Breclav.

After locating the night train when you search Bucharest-Budapest, you would find the accommodations/compartment types being offered by clicking the 'View' button under the cost(s) that display. Generally, the Double sleeping compartments would be found under the 'Comfort' or 'Premier' heading for fares.

The trains from Breclav to Katowice are currently not able to be reserved through our website. Instead, you can purchase reservations for a train from Breclav to Katowice by calling us. We can be reached at 1-800-622-8600. Our current hours are 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM CT Monday to Friday and 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM CT on Saturdays.

Trains from Bucharest to Budapest and Budapest to Breclav can be reserved once within 90 days of an intended departure date. Trains from Breclav to Katowice can only be reserved within 60 days of an intended departure date.

It is also the case that schedules for the non-reservable segment from Katowice to Krakow are not able to be viewed on our website. If need be, you can inquire about schedules for this segment by calling. The ride from Katowice to Krakow takes just over 2 hours.
