I would like to find details about traveling from Frankfurt to Sofia, Bulgaria by train in July of 2012. Is it possible, how long it takes, how much does it cost, etc. Please, respond.

    Hi Akiki,

A rail connection from Frankfurt to Sofia would take at least 30.5 hours in duration and would involve at least 3 train changes along the way.

One option takes 30.5 hours in duration and would involve changing trains in Stuttgart, Villach and Belgrade en route, with the segment from Villach to Belgrade being on an overnight train.

The other option would take 32 hours in duration and involve changing trains in Vienna, Budapest and Belgrade en route, with the first segment from Frankfurt to Vienna and the final segment from Belgrade to Sofia both being on an overnight train.

You can check ticket costs and schedules under 'Check Fares and Schedules' on the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com. You would just piece together the connections by doing separate searches for each segment of the trip (i.e. one search for trains from Frankfurt to Stuttgart, another search for trains from Stuttgart to Villach, another search to access the night train from Villach to Belgrade, and another search for trains from Belgrade to Sofia).

Also, only seats are able to be booked on our website for the night train from Villach to Belgrade and the night train from Belgrade to Sofia. To book an actual sleeping compartment on either of these trains and inquire about their costs, you would have to call us at 1-800-622-8600.

Each of the trains comprising of these connections are able to be booked within 90 days of an intended date of departure, with the exceptions of the day train from Belgrade to Sofia (as part of the first option mentioned above taking 30.5 hours) and the train from Budapest to Belgrade (as part of the second option mentioned above taking 32 hours), which both can only be booked within 60 days of an intended date of departure. Therefore, for these particular segments, you may need to enter an earlier date within the next 60 days just to get an idea of cost and schedule until the tickets are able to be booked.
