Can I take my bike on the day time Intercity Express trains from Amsterdam to Basel and then from Basel to Milan? I do have a bike bag!

I need to get me and my bike from Amsterdam to Milan in July. Any help much appreciated! I'm happy to consider other routes, such as via Paris.

    Hi David,

Only because you have the bag, you can make this trip just like anyone would be able to. A bicycle can be taken on board any train if contained within a purpose-designed bicycle bag (measuring no more than 120cm x 90cm). A bike can fit in such a bag with the wheels and pedals detached and the handlebars parallel to the frame. There is no charge to travel with your bike in one of these bags.

    Amsterdam to Basel

The most feasible connections from Amsterdam to Basel take just over 8 hours in duration and involve changing trains once in either Cologne or Frankfurt along the way.

You would purchase tickets by searching a route under 'Book Train Tickets' on the homepage of our website, For a trip from Amsterdam to Basel, you would just piece together the connection by doing a separate search for each segment (i.e. one search from Amsterdam to Cologne and then another search for connecting trains from Cologne to Basel).

When the results of your search display, please be advised that the 'Later Trains' button does not function. Therefore, to view departures at a different time of the day, you would instead have to adjust your preferred departure time from the initial search screen. Continue to do this until you come upon the direct trains for the segments you're viewing.

The trains on these routes from Amsterdam to Basel (whether you go via Cologne or whether you go via Frankfurt) are ICE high-speed trains.

    Basel to Milan

From Basel to Milan, there are direct EC (EuroCity) trains taking about 4 or 4.5 hours.

Otherwise, depending on the time of day you want to depart, your most feasible connections from Basel to Milan may take about 4.5 hours in duration and involve changing trains once in Arth Goldau along the way. For the options via Arth Goldau, you would purchase tickets by doing a separate search for each segment (i.e. one search from Basel to Arth Goldau and another search for connecting trains from Arth Goldau to MIlan).
