    Hi Josie,

It is definitely possible to travel from Bern to Lugano and then Lugano to Milan within a day.

    Bern to Lugano

A connection from Bern to Lugano takes just under 3.5 hours in duration and involves changing trains once in either Lucerne or Zurich along the way (although switching trains at the station in Lucerne would be easier than switching trains at the station in Zurich).

Trains from Bern to Lucerne and Lucerne to Lugano both do not accept reservations, so a rail pass is all you would need to board. For planning purposes, you can view schedules for all options by searching the full route from Bern to Lugano on the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com.

    Lugano to Milan

From Lugano to Milan, you would take a direct train, and the ride would take about 1.5 hours. Trains from Lugano to Milan are EC (EuroCity) trains on which reservations are required as a supplement to a rail pass.

For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase any reservations from Lugano to Milan by clicking the 'Seat Reservations' tab on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), entering the route, and indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling.
