I’m a little anxious

Can I exchange a reservation?

If I want to take and earlier train to my destination and there is space available on the train, can I use my current reservation to take a seat on the earlier train (same destination)?

    Hi Leslie,

Generally, reservations are non-refundable and non-exchangeable, however, it would depend on the train. You can view a fare's rules and guidelines by clicking on 'Select' listed with the fare when you pull up the results of your search. You would then click 'Read More' where it says 'Ticket Flexibility'.

If the reservations are non-exchangeable, you would have to purchase new reservations locally if you opt to take a different train.

My wife and I are embarking on a grand 2-week adventure in England and France. We arrive Saturday at 10:15 AM in Heathrow. We will have one large suitcase apiece, and will have to go through customs. We have a departing train at Euston station leaving at 12:30.

After doing research, I see that I can expect 1 hour in customs. Travel from Heathrow to the station will take around 1 hour, no matter which route I choose (taxi being the longest, HR Express + connecting subway being shortest, but most confusing).

I purchased tickets via Rail Europe a few months ago. There is a 2:30 train going to my destination that I want to change our tickets to. After calling Rail Europe, it seems the rules are that advance tickets must be exchanged at the rail station BEFORE the train departs. That's the kicker, I'm worried I won't make it to Euston to exchange the tickets before the train departs.

    What are my options?

  • I'm taking five teenagers/young adults on a cruise and at each port want to take a train to a different city for only one day ... and then back to the port to get back on the ship. I don't believe it makes sense to buy a pass so I'm assuming that we'll just buy individuals tickets to wherever we're going. My question is whether it's best to purchase ahead of time or wait until we arrive at the station? Which way is more economical ... especially with six in our party. If we were to buy ahead of time, can we exchange our ticket for another train in case we were to miss that train? Would call and ask an agent ... but each time I've tried to contact you ...the wait time is horrible. And I'm just down the road from you!

WOW! I entered the wrong dates for two train trips and am trying to exchange the tickets for the correct dates or just cancel and get a refund. Clicking on the hyper link for exchanges and refunds did not work (kept getting an error message) and then called the 800 number. Finally after more than 2 hours on hold I received NO help, just someone ducking the problem. He suggested that I e-mail customer service. Ha, that was a joke also, as I was told in an e-mail that I would have to exchange one ticket at the train station, but I won't be in the country until after it expires (so how?) and the other ticket can be exchanged on-line (how?)! This is just a big run around. Still waiting for a reply to my second follow-up e-mail. I will dispute the charge to my credit card if I have to do this, but it would be nice if I could get some customer "service".

  • For our train, we are taking a bus to the train station in Madrid and we have a pretty good window of time to make the overnight train from Madrid to Paris. But what if, for whatever reason, the bus was late and I missed the overnight train that I had reserved a seat on? Could I exchange it for the next day? Or would I just lose the money and have to pay another 250+ for the new ticket for the next day? If not then what can I do? Should I not buy the ticket until I want to leave? though I heard that it's better to book ahead of time for overnight trips to ensure you have a seat?

  • I’m worried!!
We made the rookie mistake of reserving our train tickets on the TGV from CDG to Bordeaux at 10:16am when our flight from Miami arrives at CDG at 8:25am. We are departing Miami this Thursday, April 27 and just realized this mistake. We are worried that we will not have time to get our luggage, pass through customs and make it to our train in time. We are not familiar with CDG or the train station, either. Our tickets are booked as TGV: French Day Train Leisure 1. They state that they may be exchanged in France at the train station prior to departure for a fee.
Is it likely we can make this train if our flight lands on time?
If it does not, what are our options?
Can we catch the next train to Bordeaux?
Is there anything we can do now to prevent any foreseeable problems?

  • Do you suggest purchasing an AVE ticket RT from Madrid to Sevilla in advance of travel dates (my departure is July 4) as I will be coming straight from an international flight into Madrid Barajas from the US? I am guesstimating 3 hours from expected time of arrival at Madrid Barajas to the Madrid Atocha Train station from departure, but as we know this could change due to flight delay, customs, etc. I have attempted a dry run of the ticket purchase to see what the fare flexibility is and it shows as:

"Spanish Long Distance Trains Estrella Tourist
Ticket is available to all travelers. Ticket requires a minimum of 7 days advanced purchase.
    Exchange/Refund Policy
Ticket is 70% refundable before train departure date. Non-exchangeable.
Refunds when applicable, may only be obtained from your original ticketing agent. Refunds and Exchanges are subject to a 7% administrative fee per ticket."

What do you suggest- advance purchase or purchase the ticket at the train station upon arrival (is this even possible for this route on this train?). It would seem if I missed my train that the fare is 70% non-refundable + admin fee. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!!

  • I'll be in France between the end of June and the beginning of July, traveling within the country (Paris, Avignon, Marseilles, Valence d'argen, and maybe other places) and likely taking two outside the country trips: one to Geneva (for sure) and one to Barcelona (not sure). I am pretty sure I will be getting a France Rail Pass to travel flexibly within the country, and get discounted prices to Geneva and Barcelona on the TGV. My questions:
    1. Is it possible to add travel days to the one-month period? Right now, I'm inclined to get the 6-day-in-a-month France Rail Pass but I worry that I will actually need more or less days. Can I add more days after purchase/use? If I don't use all the days can I get some money back?
    2. How do I book discounted prices to Geneva and/or Barcelona? What website do I go to? (tgv-europe or voyagez-scnf.com?)
    3. Where can I find an updated map of all rail service available within France? I find having to go to different websites (SCNF, TGV, and Rail Europe) confusing.
    Thanks.

  • I'm taking my family on a cruise with stops in Naples, Civitavecchia and Livorno, Italy; and then in Marseille and Cannes, France. We live in the USA, and this will be our first trip to Europe. I'm considering buying train tickets at least to get from Civitavecchia to Rome and back (I haven't researched the other cities yet), but I am unsure how long it will take us to get off the ship. It arrives at each port at 7:00 a.m., and I think I'll be okay booking a train about 8:00, but what happens if we miss a specific train? Can we use our tickets for another train, or are we out of luck? Would a rail pass make sense for each of us in my family, to get around during our days in the various ports in Italy and France? Thank you for helping me answer these questions. Mark M. in Utah, USA.

  • Four of us are flying into Zurich and taking the train to Dijon. We have purchased the Eurail France-Switzerland pass. I have read everywhere that reservations are required for the particular TGV train we hope to take. The time between our scheduled arrival and the first available train departure from the train station is about an hour and a half. The next available train is early afternoon. Ideally, we would like to arrive in Dijon early rather than later, but we have a few questions:
    1) Will we presumably have enough time disembarking, getting luggage, etc. and making this train?
    2) Is it better to make a reservation for the first train? Can it be changed for a later train in the early afternoon if we miss it?
    3) Are train reservations available after we land rather than prior to our trip?
    Any input is appreciated!
