When I check that I have a Swiss Travel Pass for my trip from Interlaken to Geneva Airport, why do I get a much smaller selection of trains? I thought my pass was valid on all trains?

I am trying to get from Interlaken to Geneva airport station. When I check the box for traveling with a rail pass (Swiss travel pass) I get a much smaller selection of trains to chose from than if I don't check the box. Why is that? I thought the pass allowed me to travel on all trains in Switzerland (with the exception of mountain trains).

    Hi Vicki.

Checking the box that says you have a rail pass is not an indicator of whether or not the pass is valid on that particular train. More than anything, its primary function is to distinguish reservable trains from non-reservable trains. If a particular train doesn't display when you check this box, it usually just means that it doesn't accept reservations and that the rail pass is all that would be needed to board.

Otherwise, there could be some other issue. For instance, if the train that isn't displaying is reservable, it could mean that it has already sold out or that the train operator in Europe hasn't enable the reservations to be sold yet. Many trains are not able to be booked outside of 60 or 90 days from an intended departure. It could also mean that there aren't any direct trains operating along the route being searched, in which case the search would need to be broken segment-by-segment.

In your case, a connection from Interlaken to the Geneva Airport does involve changing trains once in Bern along the way, but reservations are not necessary for either segment. Rest assured, the Swiss Travel Pass is all you would need to board a train from Interlaken to Bern and a train from Bern to the Geneva Airport.

If you wish, you can still purchase reservations for these trains; to do so you may just need to break up your search in Bern by doing a separate search for each segment of the connection (i.e. one search for trains from Interlaken to Bern and another search for connecting trains from Bern to Geneva Airport). When you pull up the results of these searches, it may even have a message attached to each train stating that reservations are required or recommended; however, you can rest assured that is not the case. You can disregard any message stating that reservations are required or recommended on these trains, as all you would need to board is the Swiss Travel Pass.
