I’m frustrated

Rail Protection Plan Details

Such an annoying and sneaky process. I had bought trip cancellation insurance and didn't read the fine print. When I had to cancel, they told me I had a penalty of 57% and 37% on each of the tickets. Even though I had insurance. Sneaky but dumb of me to not read and assume they would not hide something. Oh well. Now I know and I hope others take precautions and learn from my mistake.

  • Yeah, I got burned by this too. Bought the extra insurance because I knew that my travel arrangements in Europe where shaky and I might not make the train. Imagine my surprise when i discovered that I would have had to cancel the tickets at least 2 days prior to the departure!
My bad for not inquiring exactly what was covered in the insurance and just assuming that insurance would cover if for some reason you could not make your train! (in my case I was stuck on a boat miles downriver from Paris and had no way to get to the train on time!) This little "error" wound up costing me more than $1000!
Definitely a case of Caveat Emptor!

  • Yes, this is a very sneaky offer. When one buys "Rail Protection" you would think that it operates like other travel protection: You should get a refund if your trip needs to be cancelled for any reason. Yes, the fine print is important to read. But when Rail Europe "bullet points" the advantages of this protection, they fail to let you know that you are tied into only getting vouchers to be used on another rail reservation if you need to cancel. We are looking at having to cancel our European trip. And now all we can hope to recover are vouchers that need to be used within two years. Not sure we would be able to do that. So there is no hope of recovering our ticket costs. DON'T buy Rail Protection. You are better off without it.
