differences between station names in Italy

Trying to plan a trip from Zurich City to Lake Como; Lake Como to Milan; Milan to Zurich. But different station names appear. What's the difference between "Como S Giovani" & Como Nord BO"; and betwen "Milan Centrale" & "Milano N. CAD"? Are the stations close by so that it wouldn't matter which station I choose? & why doesn't anyone answer the 800 phone number in NY? The hold time is extremely LONG.

  • Hi Kaba,

For the stations in Como the S Giovanni station is the more centrally located station. However, Como is not that big of a city so either station would work.
As for Milan, both of the stations are downtown. The Centrale station is the main station so there can be better public transportation from that station.

As for the hold times, we have entered into our busy season and hold times can be long. We are trying to answer our calls as quickly as possible. When available, you can request a call back from our call back feature.

We appreciate your patience with regards to our hold times.

    Thank you,
    Jen

  • We are trying to buy roundtrip tickets for June 12, 2014 from Milan Centrale to Como S. Giovanni and your site does not give us this train stations. These are the train stations we need to use. How can we confirm this trip

      Hi Ana,

These tickets can currently be purchased on our website for the requested travel date. You would just have to enter Como a certain way to display schedules for the route.

Generally, the cities would populate into the field as you begin typing when you do your search. With regard to Como, however, you would not want to go with the option that populates in the field, because this would take you to schedules for trains that depart from the wrong station in Milan.

Instead, you would type 'Como S Giovanni' in the field for the arrival city and ignore the regular 'Como' that populates as a suggestion below as you begin typing. Also, instead of hitting the 'Tab' or 'Enter' keys to move on to next entry, you would have to use your mouse or touchpad to click off that field and onto the next. This is the only way the correct schedules (into the correct station) will display for you, with regard to a search from Milan to Como

On the next screen, when you pull up the results of your search, you would want the station in Como to display as 'Como Sangiov' and you would want to choose an option that displays 'Milano C.LE' as the departure station in Milan. 'Milano C.LE' just refers to the Milan Centrale station.

  • Hi Ana,

The Italian railroad has not yet loaded those schedules for travel after the summer schedule change which takes place on June 10. We are hoping these schedules will be available for purchase within the next couple of weeks.

Please keep checking back on the website, www.raileurope.com, to check for fares and availability.

    Thank you,
    Jen
