Do I need to purchase rail pass in advance?

I am going to travel to Europe in May for 2 weeks. I am planning to buy rail passes. Will price change if I buy rail passes closer to May? Do I need to buy it in advance?

    Hi Larisa,

There is no way to tell if a cost will change. Generally, the costs should stay about the same, but there is the possibility they can fluctuate.

Generally, rail passes are not available for purchase locally. Therefore, you would just need to purchase your pass before leaving for Europe.

When applicable, reservations are a supplementary cost to a rail pass. Reservations are required on most high-speed trains, many international routes, and all overnight trains. In Western Europe, most major cities are connected almost exclusively by high-speed trains. Therefore, it is likely that reservations will be required for many of your trips there.

You would purchase reservations by searching a route on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), checking the box that says ‘I have a rail pass’, and then indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling.

Certain reservable trains can sell out very quickly, so it would be recommended that reservations be purchased as soon as it becomes possible. Most reservable trains in Europe can be booked once within 90 days of a departure.
