How do I calculate a day on a rail pass?

On the EuroRail select pass, do the days need to be used consecutively?

We are going in May, and for 2 weeks covering Madrid, Barcelona, Monaco, Florence and Munich - however we will only be traveling by rail for 4 spread out days throughout the duration of the trip as we move from city to city. So do i select the 5 days or a 10+ option?

    Hi Rachel,

The Eurail Select Pass is what is known as a 'flexi pass'. A flexi pass allows for a set number of travel days, which must be completed within a time frame of 2 months (or possibly 1 month with certain other passes).

'Travel days' on a flexipass refer to how many separate days you plan on using your railpass. A rail day is a 24-hour period from midnight to midnight. You may take as many trains as you wish during the 24 hour time frame and still only use one day of travel on a pass. For instance, if you were take a day train from 'city A' to 'city B' and then take a connecting train to 'city C' on the same day, then you would only use up one day of travel on your railpass. In contrast, if you were to take that connecting train to 'city C' on the next day, then you would use up 2 days of rail travel on your pass.

One important rule to remember is that if you happen to take a night train that departs prior to 7 pm to arrive into the destination the next morning, then 2 days of rail travel will be used up on a railpass. Most night trains; however, do depart after 7 pm, in which case only 1 day of rail travel would be used up on a rail pass.

You can purchase the Eurail Select Pass by clicking here: http://www.raileurope.com/rail-ticket....

The number of travel days you choose for your pass would depend specifically on what you intend to do on your trip. The minimum number of travel days on the Eurail Select Pass is 5 days. From the itinerary you provided, that amount would be sufficient to cover your travels.

Just to follow-up, a rail connection from Barcelona to Monaco would involve at least 3 train changes en route; once in Figueres, once in Valence and then once in Nice.

When you go to book your reservations for this trip under 'Book a Reservation for Your Pass' on the homepage of our website, you would piece together the connection by doing separate searches for each segment. Therefore, you would do one search fo trains from Barcelona to Figueres, another search for connecting trains from FIgueres to Valence, and then another search for connecting trains from Valence to Nice. The trains from Nice to Monaco are regional trains that do not even accept reservations, so the rail pass is all you would need to board. You can just view the schedules for such non-reservable routes by entering the requested city-pairs under 'Check Fares and Schedules' on the homepage of our website and clicking the option to 'Check Schedules'.

Also, when doing a search for passholder reservations, you would actually type Figueres as 'Figueras' (with an 'a' instead of an 'e'). When you pull up the results of your searches to and from Valence, it may reflect the Valence Ville station and the Valence TGV station for certain options. You can disregard when it mentions the Ville station along with the TGV station, as you would just be arriving into and departing from the TGV station for the purpose of your connection. You would then just refer to the times corresponding to the TGV station for your connection.

Connections from Monaco to Florence involve 2 train changes along the way; once in Ventimiglia and then once in Milan. The trains from Monaco to Ventimiglia are regional trains that do not accept reservations, so the rail pass is all you would need to board. For the remaining part of the connection, you would divide up your search once again by doing separate searches for each segment, so you would do one search for trains from Ventimiglia to Milan and then another search for connecting trains from Milan down to Florence.

Lastly, connections from Florence to Munich involve at least 1 train change along the way in either Bologna or Padova. Once again, you would divide up the connection by doing separate searches for each segment.

The passholder rates on all of these trains sell out very quickly, so we would strongly recommend that you book your reservations as soon as possible.

Hi. When looking at a French rail pass, the first question is "How many days do you plan to travel by train?" Can someone please tell me what constitutes a days travel for this purpose? Is this based on how many cities you visit - so if I am traveling from Paris to Normandy and back, Paris to Champagne and back and Paris to Burgundy and back, is that three days travel by train or is it inclusive of the days you are visiting before returning back to Paris? Does it include the train travel back? Thank you !

  • Can someone explain what is meant by 5 days train travel? Is a 100 km trip in one day a day of train travel? How about 3 100 km trips in one day, is that one day of train travel or it three days?

  • When I use a bonus on a rail pass that takes a day, can I also travel on that day? For example. I will be purchasing a 5 day select pass. If on one of those 5 days, I want to use a "free bonus" which takes a day of your pass, will I be able to?

  • What does "1 day" worth of travelling really mean? 24 hours of straight riding or any amount travelled by train in a day?
I plan on travelling right from Athens, Greece up to Bergen, Norway so I need to estimate how many days I should get my Global Pass to cover.
I plan to be spending around 3 months travelling.

    Thanks!

  • What does "15 days of travel" with a 2-month global pass encompass? 15 actual rail trips, the equivalent of 15 days of on-the-rail time, or would, for example, two separate week-long vacations count as 15 days despite only using the rail 4 times?

But the difference between the three times that we need it is 7 days. Would we need a three day pass or a 7 day pass?

Rhine River Cruise uses 1 day of pass?.

I would like to purchase a German rail pass and want to be sure I cover enough days. We will travel from Kaiserslautern to Koblenz (could not find train??) to board the KD Rhine cruise. Does this use two days? or is the cruise included in the travel day of by train that day?? We plan to continue to Mainz and from there perhaps the Castle Road. Any suggestions on which trains to take, embarking on the cruise, from where and how many travel days I need to have would be greatly appreciated.
