Does a Eurail Select Pass cover Paris-Grindelwald, Grindelwald-Milan, Milan-Levanto (Cinque Terre), Cinque Terre-Lucca, and Lucca-Florence? Also, does the Swiss Travel Pass cover the Bernese Oberland Railway?

Hi! I think a Eurail Select 3 countries pass would work for my trip this summer, but I just want to make sure. I'm having a hard time confirming if it would cover everything. Here's what I have planned:July 21- Paris to Grindelwald (via Interlaken; I know the Interlaken-Grindelwald portion isn't covered)July 24- Grindelwald- MilanJuly 25- Milan- Levanto (Cinque Terre)July 28- Cinque Terre to LuccaJuly 29- Lucca to FlorenceAlso, does the Swiss Travel pass cover the Bernese Oberland railway or just provide a discount. Thanks for any help you can provide!

    Hi Anna,

For the 3 country option of the Eurail Select Pass, you would click here: www.raileurope.com/pass/eurail-select....

    Paris to Grindelwald

The fastest, most feasible connections from Paris to Grindelwald involve taking the high-speed TGV Lyria from Paris to Basel; however, as of just this week, Eurail Select Passes are no longer valid to receive passholder rates on this specific TGV Lyria route. Therefore, for your Eurail Select Pass to valid, you'll need to take the TGV Lyria from Paris to Lausanne, instead of Basel. Doing it this way would only add about a half hour to your travel time. Via Lausanne, the trip from Paris to Grindelwald would take 6.5 to 7 hours and involves a total 3 train changes along the way; once in Lausanne, once in Bern, and then once in Interlaken.

The TGV Lyria trains from Paris to Lausanne would just require reservations as a supplement to the rail pass. For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase reservations for a TGV Lyria from Paris to Lausanne by searching the route on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), checking the box that says ‘I have a rail pass’, and then indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling (i.e. a ‘Eurail Select Pass 3 Countries’). Generally, these trains can be reserved once within 90 days of an intended departure date.

Trains from Lausanne to Bern and Bern to Interlaken do not accept reservations, so the Eurail Select Pass is all you would need to board.

As you mentioned, the Eurail Select Pass is not valid on the Bernese Oberland Railway from Interlaken to Grindelwald. Tickets from Interlaken to Grindelwald can be purchased by searching the route under 'Tickets & Reservations' on our homepage. For planning purposes, you can use this same search feature to view schedules for the non-reservable trains from Lausanne to Interlaken.

    Grindelwald to Milan

The fastest, most feasible connections from Grindelwald to Milan take about 5 to 5.5 hours in duration and involve at least 3 train changes along the way; once in Interlaken, once in Spiez, and then once in either Domodossola or Brig.

Once again, the Eurail Select Pass is not valid from Grindelwald to Interlaken, so you would need to purchase a regular ticket.

Trains from Interlaken to Spiez do not accept reservations, so the Eurail Select Pass is all you would need to board. On trains from Spiez to Domodossola and Spiez to Brig, reservations are possible but not necessary.

From Domodossola to Milan, there are EC (EuroCity) and regional trains. These EC trains do not require reservations, but you would end up having to pay a small supplement locally. The regional trains do not accept reservations, so the Eurail Select is all you would need to board.

For planning purposes, you can view schedules from Interlaken to Spiez and Domodossola to Milan by doing a route search on our homepage. Our website is currently only able to display schedules from Spiez to Domodossola that involve changing in Brig along the way.

Direct trains from Brig to Milan are EC trains that would require reservations as a supplement to the rail pass. For travel with a rail pass, you can purchase reservations for an EC train from Brig to Milan by searching the route on our homepage, checking the box that says ‘I have a rail pass’, and then indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling (i.e. a ‘Eurail Select Pass 3 Countries’). Generally, these trains can be reserved once within 90 days of an intended departure date.

Milan to Levanto & the Cinque Terre

From Milan to Levanto (the town just north of the Cinque Terre), there are direct IC (InterCity) trains. IC trains in Italy require reservations as a supplement to the rail pass.

These IC trains continue on and make stops in Monterosso (the northernmost town of the Cinque Terre) and La Spezia (the town just south of the Cinque Terre). Therefore, depending on which is most convenient for you, you could book these reservations to either Levanto, Monterosso, or La Spezia.

With regard to trains in Italy, passholder reservations are currently not able to be booked on our website. If you need to purchase reservations for a train in Italy you would instead have to call us. We can be reached at 1-800-622-8600. Our current hours are 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM CT Monday to Friday and 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM CT on Saturdays. Generally, trains in Italy can only be booked once within 120 days of an intended departure date.

Once you're there, there are regional (Cinque Terre Express) trains that run between the villages of the Cinque Terre, as well as Levanto and La Spezia. These trains do not accept reservations, so you can just hop on with your rail pass. If you'd rather not squander a 'travel day' of your pass on these short trips, you can just purchase a ticket locally.

    Cinque Terre to Lucca

To get from the Cinque Terre to Lucca, you can just take a connection of regional trains via La Spezia and Viareggio. These trains do not accept reservations, so you can just hop on using your Eurail Select Pass.

There are also direct IC trains from to Viareggio from Levanto, Monterosso, or La Spezia, but these would require reservations. Therefore, you might just want to stick with the regional trains.

By breaking up your search in Viareggio, you can view schedules on our website from either Levanto to Lucca, Monterosso to Lucca, or La Spezia to Lucca (i.e. one search from Levanto to Viareggio and then another from Viareggio to Lucca).

    Lucca to Florence

Direct trains from Lucca to Florence are regional trains that do not accept reservations. Therefore, the Eurail Select Pass is all you would need to board. For planning purposes, you can still use your website to view schedules for these trains.
