Does the Eurail Select or Global pass cover travel by train and bus between cities (ex. bus from Villach to Venice)?

If I want to travel from Vienna to Venice, a bus is required for part of the trip. Is this still covered if I have a Eurail Select or Eurail Global pass?

    Hi Matt,

A daytime connection from Vienna to Venice would involve taking a bus from Villach to Venice.

Since this bus substitutes for a train that used to operate along this route, a rail pass that includes both Austria and Italy would cover its ticket costs. Reservations would still be required for the bus, in addition to the pass. You would purchase the reservations for the train from Vienna to Villach and the bus from Villach to Venice by clicking on 'Book a Reservation for Your Pass' from the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com.

When you pull up schedules for the buses from Villach to Venice, both the Mestre station in Venice and the Santa Lucia station in Venice will display as options for you to choose (the Santa Lucia station would just be displayed as 'S Lucia'). For the buses from Villach, the Santa Lucia station refers to the 'Tronchetto' bus terminal, which is where the buses would actually be arriving into. Therefore, if you choose an option that displays the Santa Lucia station as the arrival station, you would actually be arriving into the Tronchetto bus station. To get from the Tronchetto bus station to the Santa Lucia station, you would first take a shuttle directly from the bus station to Piazzale Roma. The shuttle from Tronchetto to Piazzale Roma only takes about 5 minutes. At Piazzale Roma, you would then just cross the bridge over the Grand Canal, and you would be right in front of the Santa Lucia station. This walk would only take about 5 minutes.

Otherwise, buses from Villach arrive directly into the Mestre station, however, the Mestre station is located on the mainland away from the tourist area of Venice.

Both the trains from Vienna to Villach and the buses from Villach to Venice can be booked within 90 days of an intended departure date.

Generally, a bus would only be covered by a rail pass when it substitues for a train that used to operate along the same route. In most cases, tickets for buses would have to be purchased locally in Europe.
