Eurail Select Pass travel / How to pick trains that accept the pass / Paris-Venice / Nice-Milan/ Bernina Express from Lugano to Tirano & Tirano to Chur?

I have a question about using a select Eurail pass for 4 countries. I would like info on how to find and select the trains that use this pass when I go to the train stations? Is there anyway of getting this info before I travel over there? My sister lives in Germany and says everyone has a hard time figuring this out.
Also, we are reserving our tickets for most of the trip. We have already reserved an overnight train from Paris Venice which costs extra and would like to know if that costs 1 or 2 days of Eurail Pass for travel.

Also, we're taking a train to go on the Bernina Express and going from Nice to Milan and then Milan to Lugano. From there we take Lugano by bus to Tirano and Tirano to Chur? Or are there other ways to go on the Bernina Express? I also read an article that said you can get more clear views by going on a regional train instead of the Bernina Express because there's too much glare from the windows? Thanks for the info.

    Hi Michael,

A rail pass covers trains between different cities in the country or countries included on it. With that said, the night train from Paris to Venice and the direct trains from Nice to Milan are exceptions, as a rail pass would actually not be valid on these. Other than that, you would generally not have to be too worried about trains not be covered; rail pass coverage is pretty comprehensive.

While a rail pass would not be valid on the night train from Paris to Venice and the direct day trains from Nice to Milan, one would enable you to receive 20 and 25% discounts on these respectively. Since these are just discounts for tickets, it would not use up a day of travel on a rail pass. These discounts are not available to be purchased through our website, but they can be purchased by calling us. We can be reached at 1-800-622-8600.

The night train from Paris to Venice is a 'Thello' overnight train, while the direct trains from Nice to Milan are 'Thello Day' trains.

Any rail pass that includes Switzerland would be valid on the bus from Lugano to Tirano and the train from Tirano to Chur on the Bernina Express scenic route.

The Lugano-Tirano bus and the Bernina Express train from Tirano to Chur would both require reservations in addition to the pass. However, it is currently the case that the Bernina Express segments (including both the bus and the train) are only able to be reserved by calling us. If you wish, you can take a connection comprised of regional trains to get from Tirano to Chur, as the regional trains would still follow the Bernina Express scenic route. The regional trains don't accept reservations, so your rail pass would be all you'd need to board in this case, but the Lugano-Tirano bus would still require that you have reservations.

On the actual Bernina Express trains, the glare from the panoramic windows can make it very difficult to take clear photos, but it would have no effect on the naked eye view. If you want to try taking photos from the train, then you might want to opt for a connection comprised of regional trains as your way to get from Tirano to Chur.

For a connection of regional trains on the Bernina Express route, you could do one of the following combinations:

    -Tirano to St Moritz,
    St Moritz to Chur

    -Tirano to Pontresina,
    Pontresina to Samedan,
    Samedan to Chur

The options via St Moritz would take about 5 hours in duration, while the options via Pontresina and Samedan would take about 4 to 4.5 hours in duration.

Even though the regional trains don't accept reservations, you can still check their schedules on our website. To do so, you would enter the cities for each segment on our homepage, www.raileurope.com. Therefore, for the options via St Moritz, you would do one search for trains from Tirano to St Moritz and another search for connecting trains from St Moritz to Chur. For the options via Pontresina and Samedan, you would do one search for trains from Tirano to Pontresina, another search for connecting trains from Pontresina to Samedan, and another search for connecting trains from Samedan to Chur.
