Is there an extra charge to take Renfe trains in Spain? Traveling from Barcelona to Malaga

Do we have to pay extra for Renfe trains in Spain? I see that there is a cost of $14 per person from Barcelona to Malaga.

    Hi Mark,

If you'll be traveling with a Eurail Pass that includes Spain, then reservations would be a supplementary cost whenever required by a particular train. Trains from Barcelona to Malaga are AVE high-speed trains, which do require reservations.

You would purchase reservations from Barcelona to Malaga by searching the route on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), checking the box that says ‘I have a rail pass’, and then indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling.

Generally, trains in Spain can be reserved once within 90 days of an intended departure date.

  • Thanks for the clarification! Also, if just passing through a country do I need to get a pass for that country? For example, we will be in Spain, France and Switzerland but we might take a train that starts in France and goes through Italy - would we get a 3 country or 4 country pass? Do those other countries require reservations/have supplementary fees?

    Thanks again!

    Mark
