Newcastle-Edinburgh-London-Oxford / Would you recommend a BritRail Pass? If so, would a family of 5 be able to sit together?

I am traveling in July from Newcastle to Edinburg and then will travel from Edinburgh to London. We also plan to go to Oxford for one day and possibly up to the highlands.

Would you recommend a Brit Rail Pass? If so, would we realistically be able to sit together? Are there usually seats available for a family of 5?

    Hi Paige,

For an itinerary such as this, you could do either the BritRail Pass or regular tickets. Both options would be comparable to eachother in cost, depending on the specifics of what you'll be doing.

You can check costs for the BritRail Pass here:
    https://www.raileurope.com/rail-tickets-passes/britrail-pass/index.html

Otherwise, you can check costs of regular tickets by entering a route under 'Find Train Tickets' on our homepage (www.raileurope.com) and clicking 'No' where it asks "Are you traveling with a rail pass?". You would do one search for trains from Newcastle to Edinburgh, another search for trains from Edinburgh to London, and another search for trains between London and Oxford.

Your party should be able to sit together on your trains.

If you opt for the rail pass, you'll also want to have reservations for your train from Edinburgh to London (reservations are highly recommended on this route); however, reservations for trains operating domestically within the UK are only able to be made locally. Therefore, you can request your reservations in advance at the station in Newcastle or else you can do so at the station in Edinburgh when you arrive. Unlike in other countries, passholder reservations are free on trains in the UK.
