Do the ferries around Flam operate during the winter?

We are looking to travel to Oslo in December. I am wondering if the Fjord ferry's in Flam are still running or not.

    Hi Nikki.

The ferries up by Flåm do run year-round. If you'll be heading up to that area from Oslo, you might want to consider purchasing the 'Norway in a Nutshell'. You would purchase the 'Norway in a Nutshell' here: http://www.raileurope.com/rail-tickets-passes/norway-in-a-nutshell/index.html.

The 'Norway in a Nutshell' would consist of a train from Oslo to Myrdal, a ride on the 'Flåm Railway' from Myrdal to Flåm, a ferry from Flåm to Gudvangen, a bus from Gudvangen to Voss, and then a train from either Voss to Bergen or Voss back to Oslo.

There is also the 'Sognefjord in a Nutshell', which can be purchased here: http://www.raileurope.com/rail-tickets-passes/sognefjord-in-a-nutshell/index.html.

The 'Sognefjord in a Nutshell' would consist of a train from Oslo to Myrdal, the 'Flåm Railway' from Myrdal to Flåm, a ferry from Flåm to Bergen (instead of the one to Gudvangen that you would take with the 'Norway in a Nutshell'), and a train from Bergen back to Oslo.

  • Hi Jeff,

I looked at the "Noreay in a Nutshell" trips, and they do say year round. But when I went to purchase/reserve they only had dates until the end of September & I am looking to be there in mid December. Are the December trips just not available to reserve yet?

    Thank you.

With the 'Norway in a Nutshell', you would only need to purchase reservations for the trains between Oslo and either Myrdal, Bergen, or Voss (or if you happen to choose an option that involves taking the direct train between Bergen and Myrdal)

With the 'Sognefjord in a Nutshell', you would only need to purchase reservations for the trains between Olso and Myrdal or Bergen.

Reservations for these trains would generally not become available until 90 days before a departure date.

We would not issue actual reservations for the ferries, as the 'Norway in a Nutshell' or the 'Sognefjord in a Nutshell' is all that would be needed to board. The Flåm Railway' between Myrdal and Flåm also would not accept reservations, so the 'Norway in a Nutshell' or the 'Sognefjord in a Nutshell' would be all you'd need to board.

While the reservable trains within these itineraries can be booked once within 90 days of an intended departure date, the actual 'Norway in a Nutshell' and 'Sognefjord in a Nutshell' passes can only be purchased 2 months from you plan on starting your travel (with these passes, travel must begin within 2 months from the purchase date.)
