Flying to Zurich & staying in Freiburg, Germany. Would like to travel around the Black Forest area. What should I purchase?

Staying 10 days in Freiburg, Germany, but arriving in Zurich, Switzerland. I would like to travel by train from Zurich to Freiburg, and also to be able to travel around Black Forrest area by train while in Freiburg. What is the best rail pass option for me?

    Hi Rod,

There are direct trains from the city of Zurich to Freiburg. These are ICE (InterCity Express) trains. These trains follow a route that heads west out of Zurich to Basel and then cuts north to Freiburg. The ride takes just under 2 hours.

You would purchase tickets for one of the ICE trains from Zurich to Freiburg by searching the route under 'Find Train Tickets' on the homepage of our website,

If you're interested, the scenic 'Black Forest Railway' runs from Offenburg to Singen and Konstanz (at Lake Constance); Offenburg being just a short train ride from Freiburg.

If you want to head this direction on your way from Zurich to Freiburg, it would add about 3.5 hours to your total journey time for this trip, and there would be 2 train changes along the way; once in Konstanz and then once in Offenburg; with the segment from Konstanz to Offenburg following along the 'Black Forest Railway'.

When purchasing tickets for a connection such as this on our site, you would just piece together your search segment-by-segment. Therefore, you would do one search for trains from Zurich to Konstanz, another search for connecting trains from Konstanz to Offenburg, and then another search for connecting trains from Offenburg to Freiburg.
