I’m Thankful

What should I purchase for my roundtrip between the Geneva Airport & Wengen?

Hi, could you please assist on wat ticktet type should I purchase for travelling from Geneva airport to wengen. Our trip is in January 2018. We will be staying in wengen for four days and return from Geneva airport so might not need any other train ticket. Hence I'm not sure if we need a discount card or train pass. Does my one year old son need a ticket as well. Thank you

  • Hi Prathima,

If your travel only consists of a roundtrip between the Geneva Airport and Wengen, then I would recommend purchasing an item called the 'Swiss Transfer Ticket'. The Swiss Transfer Ticket covers the ticket costs for one trip from any Swiss airport (or border station) to any single destination in Switzerland and then another trip from that destination to any Swiss airport (or border station). Therefore, it would be valid to cover you from the Geneva Airport to Wengen and then from Wengen back to the Geneva Airport.

For the Swiss Transfer Ticket, you would click here: https://www.raileurope.com/rail-tickets-passes/swiss-transfer-ticket/index.html.

The Swiss Transfer Ticket is significantly more economical than purchasing regular tickets for this route or the Swiss Travel Pass itself.

Your 1-year-old son would not need a ticket.

Geneva Airport to Wengen via Bern

The fastest and most feasible connections from the Geneva Airport to Wengen take just under 4 hours in duration and involve 3 train changes along the way; once in Bern, once in Interlaken, and then once in Lauterbrunnen.

On these trains, reservations are not necessary at all (or even accepted), so the Swiss Transfer Ticket is all you would need to board.

For planning purposes, you can view schedules the Geneva Airport up to Interlaken by doing a search on the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com.

Schedules for some of the short trains beyond Interlaken may not be able to be viewed on our website. For your reference, trains from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen depart twice every hour throughout the day, and the ride only takes about 20 minutes. Trains from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen also depart twice every hour throughout the day. The ride from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen only takes 14 minutes (18 minutes in the direction of Wengen to Lauterbrunnen for a return).

Trains from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen run along the Bernese Oberland Railway, and trains from Lauterbrunnen run along the Wengernalp Railway.

Geneva Airport to Wengen via the GoldenPass route (Montreux and Zweisimmen)

If you don't mind adding about 1.5 hours to your journey time, the Swiss Transfer Ticket would also be valid to cover a trip between the Geneva Airport and Wengen by way of the famed GoldenPass scenic route.

You would connect to the GoldenPass route by taking a train from the Geneva Airport to Montreux. The GoldenPass would then run from Montreux to Interlaken via Zweisimmen.

With this option, the connection from the Geneva Airport to Wengen would take about 5.5 hours in duration and involves 4 train changes along the way; once in Montreux, once in Zweisimmen, and the once in Interlaken.

Of the trains comprising of this connection, reservations would only be recommended on the segment from Montreux to Zweisimmen. For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase reservations for a train from Montreux to Zweisimmen by clicking the 'Seat Reservations' tab on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), entering the cities, and typing 'Swiss Travel Pass' in the field underneath where it says, 'Are you traveling with a rail pass?'. Even though you will not actually have a Swiss Travel Pass, doing this would prompt our website to issue you the correct reservations for this train.

On the segment from Montreux to Zweisimmen, you'll have the option of either ‘Classic’ GoldenPass trains or ‘Panorama’ GoldenPass trains. These will be labeled accordingly when you pull up the results of this search. Carriages on the 'Classic' trains have a vintage turn-of-the-century Belle Époque look, whereas the 'Panorama' train carriages have a more modern look. 'Classic' GoldenPass trains also have 'wine cellar coaches', which offer a wider selection of wine than would be offered in the bar cars on the 'Panorama' trains; however, food is available for purchase on both the 'Classic' and 'Panorama' trains. The Classic trains do have large windows, but the windows on the Panorama trains are larger and more “panoramic”.

On the segment from Zweisimmen to Interlaken, reservations are possible but not necessary.

For planning purposes, you can view schedules for the segments from the Geneva Airport to Montreux and Zweisimmen to Interlaken on our homepage.

Once again, schedules for the segments from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen and Lauterbrunnen to Wengen are not able to be viewed on our website.
