Is is true the German Rail Pass now covers travel to Belgium & Italy on certain trains?

I read somewhere that the German Rail Pass Extension allowing travel to Belgium and Italy on certain trains is now included in the basic German Rail Pass.

Is this true?

Thank you for your question, Martin.

That is true. As of the new year, the German Rail Pass by itself is now valid on direct 'InterCity Express' (ICE) trains between Cologne or Frankfurt in Germany and Brussels or Liège in Belgium, as well as direct 'EuroCity' (EC) trains between Munich in Germany and either Bolzano/Bozen, Trento, Verona, Bologna, and Venice in Italy. Please note, the German Rail Pass would not be valid on any of the 'Thalys' trains that operate between Germany and Belgium.

In addition to the rail pass, reservations are highly recommended on the direct InterCity Express trains between Germany and Brussels or Liège. In contrast, the direct EuroCity trains between Germany and Italy would require reservations in addition to the rail pass.

Generally, for travel with a pass, you would be able to purchase reservations by entering a route after clicking on 'Book your Rail Pass Reservations' on our homepage and indicating the type of rail pass you'll be traveling with when you're prompted. However, reservations for travel with the German Rail Pass on these trains are not able to be booked there at this time. Instead, you would be able to purchase reservations on any of these trains by indicating that you'll be traveling with a Eurail Global Pass when you're prompted. This is just so our website would know to issue the correct reservations for these trains, so it wouldn't matter that you won't actually be traveling with the Eurail Global Pass while you're in Europe.

These trains can only be booked within 90 days of an intended date of departure. If your intended travel happens to fall outside of this time frame, you would just enter an earlier date, some time within the next 90 days, to get an idea of the ticket costs and view schedules when searching a route on our site
