Germany/France/Italy Pass- Munich To Rome, Passing through Austria.

I have a select 3 country pass for Germany/France/Italy. When searching for available trains from Munich to Rome, it comes up as available despite it clearly crossing through the Austrian border. Is this normal? I just wanted to make sure.

    Hi Mike,

All countries being traveled through would have to be accounted for on your rail pass. If you'll be traveling from Munich to Rome, then Austria would generally have to be included as a country on your pass for you not to be charged a supplement locally to pass through Austria.

However, the direct overnight train from Munich to Rome and direct days trains from Munich to Bologna or Verona (as part of a daytime connection from Munich to Rome) display, because you would be able to purchase your reservations on these trains at what is known as the 'Passholder 2' rate. The Passholder 2 rate is a special rate offered on certain trains, created to allow passengers in possession of a rail pass that doesn't include one of the countries being traveled through for a particular route, to still take the train at a lesser cost.

To ensure you are purchasing the tickets at a Passholder 2 rate for one of these trains, you would take the following steps:

1.) You would do a search for the individual train under 'Book a Reservation for Your Pass' and indicate the type of pass you are traveling with when prompted.

2.) You would then locate a direct train from Munich into Italy and click on 'Select' listed with the costs that are shown for your preferred train.

3.) After you've clicked on 'Select', you would then refer to where it says 'Ticket Flexibility'. Underneath 'Ticket Flexibility', you may see 3 options: 'Non Flexible', 'Semi Flexible' and 'Fully Flexible. You would click 'Read More' next to each of these options until you see the fare titled either 'City Night Line Passholder 2' (for the overnight train from Munich to Rome) or 'Germany Italy Day Train Passholder 2' (for the trains from Munich to either Bologna or Verona). Generally, the Passholder 2 rate would be found under the 'Semi Flexible' option or 'Fully Flexibile' option.

4.) Be sure the option with 'Passholder 2' in its name is checked, and then click 'Select' to proceed and add it to your shopping cart.

If no fare displays with 'Passholder 2' in its name, then I would recommend that you call us at 1-800-622-8600 to verify the availability, because it may be the case that the Passholder 2 fares would just only be able to be booked through our call center in such an instance.

You would, of course, be able to purchase regular passholder rates (reservations) for connecting trains operating within Italy, since Italy is included on your pass.

These trains can be booked within 90 days of an intended date of departure.
