Glacier Express from St Moritz to Zermatt & then best route from Zermatt to Lausanne

We want to take the Glacier Express from St Moritz to Zermatt. We want to also get a rental car in Lausanne after the train ride. What is the best way to get to Lausanne from Zermatt? Thank you.

    Hi Pat,

Connections from Zermatt to Lausanne take about 3 hours in duration and involve changing trains once in Visp along the way.

Since you'll also be doing the Glacier Express route from St Moritz to Zermatt, your most economical option would be to purchase the Swiss Travel Pass. For the Swiss Travel Pass, you would click here: http://www.raileurope.com/en/pass/swiss-travel-pass-82.

The Swiss Travel Pass would be valid to cover the ticket costs for the Glacier Express and your trip from Zermatt to Lausanne.

The trains from Zermatt to Visp and Visp to Lausanne do not accept reservations, so the Swiss Travel Pass is all you would need to board. For planning purposes, you can still use the route search feature under 'Book Train Tickets' on our homepage (www.raileurope.com) just to view schedules for the route from Zermatt to Lausanne.

Unlike the trip from Zermatt to Lausanne, the Glacier Express will require reservations as a supplement to the rail pass. For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase reservations from St Moritz to Zermatt by searching the route on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), checking the box that says ‘I have a rail pass’, and then indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling (i.e. the 'Swiss Travel Pass'). Generally, the Glacier Express can be reserved once within 90 days of an intended departure date. The Glacier Express can sell out quickly, so it is recommended that the reservations be purchased as soon as possible.

In Zermatt, one of the main draws is the observation deck at Gornergrat, where you'll have spectacular views of the Matterhorn. To reach Gornergrat, you would take the Gornergratbahn cogwheel train, for which the Swiss Travel Pass would qualify you to receive a 50% discount. For this discount on the Gornergratbahn you would purchase the 'Mountain Tops: Gornergrat Zermatt to Gornergrat Swiss Travel Pass Holder' option (Low season, Mid-season, or High-season depending on when you'll be taking the trip) of the pass for 'Mount Gornergrat' here: http://www.raileurope.com/pass/mount-gornergrat.

Also very highly recommended in Zermatt is the gondola and cable cars up to Klein Matterhorn/Glacier Paradise. For the gondola and cable cars from Zermatt to Klein Matterhorn/Glacier Paradise, the Swiss Travel Pass would again enable you to receive a 50% discount. To receive this discount, you would purchase the ‘Mountain Tops: Matterhorn Glacier Paradise Zermatt to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise Swiss Travel Pass Holder’ option (Low season, Mid-season, or High-season depending on when you'll be taking the trip) of the pass for ‘Matterhorn Glacier Paradise’ here: http://www.raileurope.com/pass/matterhorn-glacier-paradise-8319. This pass will cover you on the gondola from Zermatt to Furi, cable car from Furi to Trockener Steg, and then the highest cable car in Europe from Trockener Steg to Klein Matterhorn. This pass also includes entrance through the ice tunnel to the Glacier Palace and access to the viewing platform for more views of the Matterhorn and surrounding Alps.
