Eurail Global Pass for trains in France and the train from Brussels to Marseille

Hi,
I'm considering buying a 2 month global pass, so I was looking at the train times. The booking engine said that Brussels to Marseille was not covered by the Eurail Global Pass. I figured this might be because it's TGV, but your website says there are a few seats available for Global Pass holders.

Then I checked shorter trains: Paris to Marseille, Marseille to Lyon, Marseille to Nice. All of these said that the Global Pass did not cover the train. I figured these shorter, same country trips would be covered.

Since I am 0 for 5 on finding trains covered by the Global pass, it looks like I'm not understanding how it works. Can you explain what the Global pass covers? I don't want to pay $1500 for a pass that doesn't get me on any trains.

    Hi Alex,

The 'Eurail Global Pass' covers the ticket costs for all those trains, so I'm not sure where you'd be seeing that information. A rail pass covers the ticket costs for trains between different cities in the country or countries included on a pass. When applicable, reservations are a supplementary cost to a rail pass, and reservations are required on all TGV trains, including the 'Brussels-Provence TGV' from Brussels to Marseille.

For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase reservations by clicking on 'Book your Rail Pass Reservations' on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), entering a route, and indicating the type of rail pass you'll be traveling with (i.e. a 'Eurail Global Pass'). Generally, these trains can be booked once within 90 days of an intended date of departure. The 'passholder' rates (reservations) on these trains can sell out very quickly, so it is recommended that the reservations be purchased as soon as possible.

The train from Brussels to Marseille is a 'Brussels-Provence' or 'Brussels-France' TGV.

The trains from Paris to Marseille are TGV trains.

The trains from Marseille to Lyon are TGV trains.

The trains from Marseille to Nice are TGV trains.

The Eurail Global Pass would be purchased here: https://www.raileurope.com/rail-tickets-passes/eurail-global-pass/index.html.

  • Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the reply. I had hoped that these were included, so I'm glad to hear it.

There must be something wrong with the booking engine, then. Here's a screen shot of the problem that I'm having. There's no date shown, but I originally did the search for March 17.

    Maybe I'm using it wrong?

    Hi Alex,

I think I see what the issue is. We're currently in the process of updating our website. The older version and newer version are both still accessible, and I was using the older version when I took a look at these routes. There should be no discrepancy between the older and newer version but, with regard to specific routes you're searching, I just verified that there is an error on the newer version and no error on the older version. We are very sorry for any inconvenience.

On your browser, you should be able to access the older version by physically typing out the URL, www.raileurope.com. The homepage would look like this:

If you aren't able to access the older version and the homepage you see still looks the same as before, please feel free to call us. We can be reached at 1-800-622-8600. Our current hours are 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM CT Monday to Friday and 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM CT on Saturdays.
