Zurich Airport to Zermatt, Zermatt to Chur on the Glacier Express, and Chur to the Zurich Airport. What rail pass do we need?

We are travelling from Zurich Airport to Zermatt and want to know what train(s) and how many stops and transfers we will have to make? We will be travelling with 2 pieces of big luggage and want as few stops and train changes as possible. From Zermatt we will be taking the Glacier Express and want to stay in Chur. Do we go through St. Moritz and then on to Chur or does the Glacier Express go directly through to Chur? Also we will start our travel in Switzerland Oct. 7th in Zurich ; spend 2 days in Zermatt (Oct.7&8),1 day in Chur (Oct.9) and overnight Oct.10th at Zurich Airport todepart Oct.11th for an early morning departure to Canada. What rail pass do we need to cover this itinerary?

    Hi,

Zermatt and St Moritz are the two endpoints of the Glacier Express scenic route. Chur is in between Zermatt and St Moritz. Therefore, if you take the Glacier Express from Zermatt to Chur, you would not have you going through St Moritz. St Moritz is still another 2 to 2.5 hours beyond Chur.

For the itinerary you laid out, you would purchase the Swiss Travel Pass. For the Swiss Travel Pass, you would click here: https://www.raileurope.ca/rail-tickets-passes/swiss-pass/index.html (Canadian website).

    Zurich Airport to Zermatt

A connection from the station at Zurich Airport to Zermatt takes about 3.5 hours in duration and involves changing trains once in Visp along the way. The segment from Visp from Zermatt would have you following a portion of the Glacier Express route.

On trains from Zurich Airport to Visp and Visp to Zermatt, reservations are not at all necessary. Therefore, the Swiss Travel Pass is all you would need to board.

For planning, you can view schedules for these trains by doing a search on the homepage of our website. When searching schedules for trains out of the station at the airport, you would just type 'Zurich Airport' in the field for the departure city.

    Zermatt to Chur

The Glacier Express runs direct all the way from Zermatt to Chur. This train does require reservations, as a supplement to a rail pass.

For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase reservations from Zermatt to Chur by clicking the 'Seat Reservations' tab on our homepage, entering the route, and indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling (i.e. a 'Swiss Travel Pass').

Generally, the Glacier Express can only be reserved once within 90 days of an intended departure date. Since your intended travel falls outside of this time frame, you would just have to use an earlier date (some time within the next 90 days) to get an idea of the reservation costs and schedules.

    Chur to Zurich Airport

A connection from Chur to the Zurich Airport takes just over 1.5 hours in duration and involves changing trains once in the city of Zurich along the way.

On trains from Chur to Zurich and Zurich to the Zurich Airport, reservations are not necessary at all, so the rail pass is all you would need to board.

For planning, you can view schedules for these trains by doing a search on the homepage of our website. When searching schedules for trains to the station at the airport, you would just type 'Zurich Airport' in the field for the arrival city.
