Harwich to London

I notice that most of the trains from Harwich to London Liverpool have a train change that must be accomplished in 3 minutes. How is that possible when traveling with luggage??

  • I have checked the information for the connection city of Manningtree. They are stating that the minimum connect time with any train is 2 minutes. Since this is a smaller station, you may not even need to change platforms or you would just walk across to the other platform to cacth the train to London. If you would like a longer connect time to feel more comfortable, then you can book each segment individually. By doing this the fares may turn out to be higher than if you purchase a through ticket.

For example. If you purchase a ticket departing Harwich at 08:28 arriving Manningtree at 08:50. Then depart Manningtree at 08:53 arriving London at 09:56 the fare is currently $29.00. However, if you take the same outbound train from Harwich to Manningtree the fare would be $8.00. Then the train from Manningtree to London departing at 09:19 arriving at 10:19 would be $27.00 for a total cost of $35.00.

The National Rail companies will only give the short connect times if they did not feel that you would make your connecting train, even with luggage.

The trains will announce the next stop so that you can be prepared with your luggage to disembark the train once it pulls into the station.

I hope this information helps you while you are booking your train travels in the UK. Have a great day.

  • Thanks Jen! That is most encouraging. Would you expect the train to be full at 9AM on a Tuesday morning (May 15th)? One of my concerns is not making my connection due to a long line of folks trying to get off or on the train in Manningtree.

Also, it appears that I have mistakenly chosen a train that starts in Harwich Town, when I was attempting to search only for trains that start in Harwich International!! Oh my!! I cannot seem to get an EXCHANGE done online. Should I call the 800 number for help?

    Thanks for all your help!

  • I was looking at schedules from Harwich Town to London. These trains will route though the airport. Since we are not able to change the tickets here, the best option would be to print your ticket locally and go to the ticket window and have it changed to the airport station.
As long as the fare you booked is exchangeable, this should not be a problem. If you do have more questions regarding your ticket, then it would be best to call us and we will look to see what the fare rules are for that ticket.

  • I’m happy
Hi, Jen. Thanks for checking back with me.

I did call and spoke with a very helpful lady who checked on the route of the train for me. (I think you did this also, but I did not think through what you said very clearly.) I now understand that the train I am supposed to board in Hampton Town at 9:28 will reach Hampton International at 9:33, which is where I will be. According to the lady I spoke with, my tickets will allow us to board at Hampton International since my tickets include MORE travel than I will be using. (In other words my tickets won't allow me to board the train EARLIER than the 9:28 stop at Hampton Town, but I can board LATER (9:33 at Hampton International).

I hope she was right with what she told me. After she told me, I asked her again to make sure I understood and she confirmed that I would be able to board at Hampton International with my current tickets when the train stops there.

If you know that she is wrong, please tell me so I won't be surprised when I try to board. :-)

    Thanks again!

  • Hi Jimmy,

As long as you print your ticket before the train departs Harwich Town, then you will not have any issues boarding the train. So the person you spoke to did give you the correct information.

We hope you have a nice trip abroad. Have a wonderful day.
