Has anyone purchased the ekit phone and if so, which one?

We will be travelling in Europe in September and are wondering whether we should purchase the ekit phone prior to departure or purchase a pre-paid cell phone when we arrive in Switzerland. We wll be taking a Rhine cruise and ending up in Paris.

    Hi Maxine,

In case you decide to purchase the ekit phone before you depart for Europe, you can find the information here: http://www.raileurope.com/activities/....
    • Jeff, I have been checking around regarding different ways of calling home and having family and friends call me from home. I called customer service for the ekit phone, am I correct in understanding that as long as whoever calls me at the UK number given the incoming calls, texts and 20 messages per day from facebook are free? That the only charges I will incur towards my calling plan will be if I call or text to home?

  • Maxine I have been checking into the advantages of using the ekit phone. If you get the quad-band phone it can be used in the US and Canada as well as Europe. Thus if you need it in the future it is available.

Also if I understand correctly if you have friends and family call you on the UK number provided the incoming calls and texts to you are free. You would only use your minutes if you call out. By having a feature added on my land line service I am able to get calls from home for 10 cents a minutes in London, 12 cents a minute in Paris and 14 cents a minute in Rome. These rates are much lower than the ones you would receive if you make the phone calls. I am going to leave an itenary with my family with the time difference noted and have them call me during the late evening instead of me calling them.

  • Hi Cathy,

I do agree with you that the feature for the better phone is good. And having your family call you is better than if you call them. I am not sure if that phone will work for you here in the states, unless they changed their service, however, they may still charge you buy the minute if it does. Having your regular cell phone here would be the better option for you, but in case of an emergency, you can still use the Ekit cell phone.
I do hope this works well for you while traveling abroad. Have a great trip.

    Jen

  • I’m SM from Canada
We purchased an JT ekit phone and found the phone itself to be a very poor quality phone, the phone system is poorly designed and glitchy, your usage minutes get used quickly used up by malfunctioning calls, the company help line is very frustrating to deal with...all and all, for a reputable company like Rail Europe to be associated with this company is a negative against their reputation.

    • Rail Europe should send every customer who purchases an ekit a customer survey message asking about their experience using the ekit phones. It's possible my experience was not the norm but if the majority of people are as unsatisfied as I am, then JT phone company is doing serious damage to Rail Europe's reputation.

  • I’m disappointed
I bought a JT eKit phone and it doesn't work! I activated it before departing the US and was able to complete my test call. Upon arrival in France, it was unable to find a network. I logged into my account on-line and discovered that I had nearly $10 of data sessions - none of them mine - that had been charged to my account. I then loaded the account with $50 of talk and $140 of data and now the phone doesn't even turn on. Very disappointed.
