Thank you for your question, Richard.

The 'Family' option on BritRail Passes and BritRail England Passes does enable one child (between the age of 5 and 15) to travel free with each paying adult or senior. Since there will be 4 adults (including the 2 seniors) in your party, all 4 children can travel free.

You would purchase the BritRail Pass (which covers England, Scotland, and Wales) by clicking here: http://www.raileurope.com/rail-tickets-passes/britrail-pass/index.html.

You would purchase the BritRail England Pass (which only covers England) by clicking here: http://www.raileurope.com/rail-tickets-passes/britrail-england-pass/index.html.

To be issued the 'Family' option for your party, you would just need to make the appropriate selection for each passenger under where it says 'Who is traveling?' on the page for the BritRail Pass or BritRail England Pass on our website. Therefore, you would choose 'Adult (26-59)' twice to account for the 2 adult passengers, 'Senior (over 60)' twice to account for the 2 senior passengers, and 'Youth/Child (4-25)' 4 times to account for the 4 children.

After you've accounted for all 8 passengers, you would click 'Yes' where it asks 'Special prices are offered for 2 or more travelers. Is everyone in your party traveling together at all times?'

By doing this, you will be quoted a price that does not include charges for any of the 4 children in the party.

For your party, you would want your screen to look like this:

e.g. kidding, amused, unsure, silly indifferent, undecided, unconcerned sad, anxious, confused, frustrated happy, confident, thankful, excited

  • When I enter our 3 children into the 'who is traveling' section, it does add a charge for the children. Without the children, the cost for 2 adults and 2 seniors is $1,084, and with the children the cost for those 4 adults is $1,254 . We, of course, want there to be no charge for the children.

      Hi Christine,

With the BritRail Pass, the free child offer is only valid when the adult and/or senior passengers are booked at the regular adult/senior rates.

If you search for the 4 adult passengers by themselves (2 adults and 2 seniors) and indicate that you all will be traveling together at all times, the rate you will be quoted is a discounted rate called the 'Saver' rate.

Once you add the child passengers, the total you see will not factor in a 'Saver' rate for the adults and seniors (since the free child offer is only valid when the adult and/or senior passengers are booked at the regular adult/senior rates). Instead, the total in this case would reflect the regular rates for adults and seniors.
