Zurich to Interlaken without a travel pass

We will not have a travel pass... do we need to purchase our train tickets in advance or can we just arrive at the train station and purchase a ticket then? If we need to purchase in advance, how much time should we allow between landing and booking a train ticket?

    Hi Jill,

It is recommended to purchase tickets in advance, so you have them before arriving.

There is a station right at the Zurich Airport. At the airport itself, the time it takes to get from the gate to the trains can depend. I would just recommend allowing a time that is comparable to the amount of time it would take for you to walk through a typical major North American airport and retrieve luggage. It is also recommended that you allow an additional hour to get through customs if your flight is arriving from overseas.

Zurich Airport to Interlaken (via Bern)

From Zurich Airport to Interlaken, the fastest connections take just under 2.5 hours in duration and involve changing trains once in Bern along the way.

You would purchase tickets by searching a route under 'Book Train Tickets' on the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com. For the fastest options from Zurich Airport to Interlaken, you would piece together the connection by doing a separate search for each segment. Therefore, you would do one search from 'Zurich Airport' to Bern and another search for connecting trains from Bern to Interlaken.

Currently, when searching for fares and schedules on our website, 'Zurich Airport' will not actually populate into the city fields. However, you can still type it in there anyway and the schedules will display. When you pull up the results of your search from ‘Zurich Airport’ to Bern, the station at the airport would be labeled as ‘Zuerich Flughafen’.

Zurich Airport to Interlaken (via Lucerne/GoldenPass)

If you don't mind adding about an hour to your journey time, you can take a different route that involves following along a segment of the famed GoldenPass scenic route for part of the way. This option would take just over 3 hours in duration and involves changing trains once in Lucerne along the way, instead of Bern. The segment from Lucerne to Interlaken is on the GoldenPass scenic route.

You would purchase tickets by searching a route under 'Book Train Tickets' on the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com. For the options via Lucerne, you would just have to actually break up your search in Lucerne. Once again, be sure to type out 'Zurich Airport' in the field for your departure city for the first segment. Therefore, you would do one search from 'Zurich Airport' to Lucerne and another search for connecting trains from Lucerne to Interlaken.

The trains from Lucerne to Interlaken have panoramic windows for taking in all the surrounding scenery.
