    Hi Linda,

Positano and the Amalfi Coast region of Italy can only be reached by taking the privately owned and operated 'Circumvesuviana Line' from Naples to Sorrento. From Sorrento, you can take 'SITA' buses that will take you to towns on the actual Amalfi Coast, including directly over to Positano. During the Summer months, you could also take a ferry to get from Sorrento to Positano.

Since the Circumvesuviana trains are privately owned and operated, tickets would have to be purchased locally upon arrival. These Circumvesuviana trains depart once every half hour, and it would take about 55 to 68 minutes in duration between Naples and Sorrento. The ruins of Pompei are also located off the Circumvesuviana line (the 'Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri' stop), as is Mt. Vesuvius (the 'Ercolano' stop) of this rail line.

Thus, to get from Rome to Positano, you would take a train from Rome to Naples, where you would switch to a Circumvesuviana train down to Sorrento. Conveniently, the Piazza Garibaldi station is located in the lower level of the same building as the Naples Centrale station, which is considered the main rail station in Naples where most trains from Rome will arrive into. Once you are in Sorrento, you would purchase tickets for the bus (or ferry) that will take you to Positano.

You would purchase tickets and check schedules for trains from Rome to Naples by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com. The trains from Rome to Naples are high-speed Frecciarossa/Frecciargento trains, regular InterCity trains, or high-speed Italo trains.

To catch the train from Rome down to Naples, you would first have to commute into the city from the airport by taking the Leonardo Express. The Leonardo Express trains depart every 30 minutes throughout the day and the ride takes about 30-35 minutes between the airport and the Termini station in Rome. Conveniently, the train station at the Rome FCO Airport is located in the area that's central to all terminals and is very easy to get to.

A common minimum connection time is 7 to 10 minutes for changing trains at the typical station in Europe; however, I would recommend that you allow yourself more like 20 minutes to change trains at the Termini station in Rome, where the Leonardo Express trains will arrive into.

To arrange for a connection time of your choosing, you can just do a separate search for each segment of the connection when you go to purchase tickets. Therefore, you would do one search for trains from the airport to the city of Rome and then another search for connecting trains from the city of Rome to Naples. For the Rome FCO Airport, you would just type 'Rome Airport' so that it will be recognized by our website. When doing your searches, be sure to match the station of departure for your train from Rome to Naples with the station of arrival for the trains coming from the airport.

When doing your searches on our site, you would also want to choose the specific hour for each set of departures you wish to view in order to view the most possible options (i.e. '10 am' for all trains that depart during the 10 o'clock hour). Ideally, you would be able to click the 'Later Trains' button that appears at the bottom of the list of schedules that displays; however, there is currently an error on our site that would prevent all trains from displaying when you do this and limiting the options you'll be able to see.

  • Jeff, Thank you for all that information! We plan to take the train from Rome to Naples. I would like to purchase tickets in advance, but hesitate because you never know about flight delays and we will be joining other travelers who are arriving at different times. Is it necessary to purchase in advance? We will be traveling June 24 arriving in the morning. Is that a busy time? ( From the Naples station I plan to arrange a driver from the station to the villa, but thank you for the bus information). Thanks!

    Hi Linda,

The Summer months are very busy for rail travel in Italy. It is generally recommended that tickets be purchased in advance, prior to departing for Europe. In any case, the tickets for the Leonardo Express trains are issued as open tickets that would be valid on any single train from the airport to the city of Rome that operates within 2 months from the date of purchase.

    Hi Linda,

Trains from Rome to Naples do require reservations. If a particular train requires reservations, then the reservation is automatically included with any ticket purchase for that train, and the ticket would generally not be able to be used for any train other than the train the ticket was booked for. You would view a fare's rules and guidelines by clicking on the 'View' button that's listed with the costs for each departure that displays. After clicking on 'View,', you would then click 'Read More' where it says 'Ticket Flexibility'.

  • I’m anxiously awaiting an answer.
Would like to know the time involved from Florence to Capri and Sorrento area. . Would like to see Pompeii on the way back to FLORENCE. Our time is limited. We would stay an overnight in Sorrento and possibly see the walled city. The problem is we would leave FLORENCE, early morn on the 16 and go the furthest point and then get on and off back to Florence the evening of the 19th. Is this a possibility and approximately what would be the rail cost (fast train). Am I asking to accomplish too much????

    CHAO!
    Ann

  • We are trying to find the most economical, but pleasant one-way transportation from Naples to Palermo. We are spending 3 days in Sorrento and then going to Sicily. Air fare is over budget, I'm not sure if the train or the ferry would be the best choice. Please help. Thanks

  • I just realized that my reservations from Naples to Rome are before I can get to Naples from Sorrento. Can I change them in Sorrento? If so is it at an office at the train station or other location. Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

  • My family of 4 (2 adults & 2 kids) will be in Italy in July. We will need to ride the train from Rome to Florence, Florence to Pisa & return, Florence to Venice, Venice to Rome, Rome to Naples (pompeii) & return. What would be our best priced option as far as tickets go? If we do the railpass will we always need seat reservations or can we use our pass on a slower train or different class and avoid the additional reservation fee?

  • What is the travel time from Rome to Venice on the Eurorail standard pass train... Versus the LeFrecce train?

I know we need to wait until we are closer to our travel dates of Dec 1 and return Dec 6, but am trying to gauge if the price of the LeFrecce is worth the cost difference of a Eurorail ticket. And if the Eurorail train is time prohibitive.

    Thanks,
    Karen
