How to best travel from Rome to Sicily?

My husband mistakenly purchased tickets to Rome (from the western US) when we really intend to visit our friends in Catiana, Sicily. We are wondering if we should make a fun sight seeing leisure trip out of it by traveling by train/ferry from Rome to Catiana, or what our options are???

    Hi Billie,

I'd imagine that you'd probably have to fly into Rome or Naples anyway in order to connect onward to Sicily. If you'll be in Rome, you can certainly take the train to get down to Catania. You would purchase tickets and check schedules for trains from Rome to Catania by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on the homepage of our website, www.raileurope.com.

Generally, trains in Italy can only be booked within 90 days of an intended date of departure. If your intended travel falls outside of this time frame, you would just enter an earlier date, within the next 90 days, to get an idea of the ticket costs and view schedules when searching the route on our website. With that said, due the annual Summer schedule change, some trains in Italy operating after mid-June may not be able to be booked until early/mid-May.
