    Hi Antoinette,

There is no overnight train that goes from Venice to Sant'Agata di Militello, however, you can make a connection from Venice to Sant'Agata di Militello that involves taking an overnight train for part of the route. This connection takes about 14.5 to 15 hours in duration and involves 2 train changes along the way; once in Rome and then once in Messina. The segment from Rome to Messina would be on the actual overnight train. This night train only carries sleeping accommodations. There are no seating accommodations on this particular night train.

From Venice to Rome, you would take a high-speed Frecciarossa or Frecciargento train. On these trains, reservations would be required in addition to a rail pass.

Please note, on the segment from Venice to Rome, there are also trains called 'Italo' trains that do not accept rail passes. Therefore, you would want to be sure to choose one of the Frecciarossa or Frecciargento trains for this segment, so that you can be covered with your pass.

The night train from Rome to Messina also requires reservations in addition to a rail pass.

Most trains from Messina to Sant'Agata di Militello are regional trains that don't even accept reservations. Therefore, a rail pass is all that's needed to board one of these trains.

For travel with a rail pass, you would purchase reservations by clicking the 'Seat Reservations' tab on our homepage (www.raileurope.com), entering a route, and indicating the type of rail pass with which you'll be traveling. For this route, you would just have to break up your search once in Rome. Therefore, you would do one search for trains from Venice to Rome and then another search to access the night train from Rome to Messina.

Generally, these trains can be reserved once within 90 to 120 days of an intended date of departure.

Due to an error on our website, when trying to access schedules and ticket costs for night trains, it is usually necessary to adjust your preferred departure time by entering a time closer to the specific hour of the train's departure time. Therefore, when you go to enter the criteria of your Rome-Messina search, you would want to choose some time in the evening, like '07 pm' as your preferred departure time. By doing this, you will get the actual night train to display in the results of your search.

When you pull up the results of your search for the segment from Rome to Messina, you would check the type of sleeping compartments being offered by clicking the 'View' button that's underneath the fares that display for the night train option.

Schedules for the segment from Messina to Sant'Agata di Militello are not able to be viewed on our website. If you'd like to inquire about schedules for this part of the route, you would have to call us. We can be reached at 1-800-622-8600. The ride from Messina to Sant'Agata di Militello only takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
