Helsinki to Trondheim via the Arctic Circle/without taking a ferry. I'd like to take a train from Helsinki north to Oulu & then down to Trondheim. How can I book this?

    Hi Stacy,

A connection from Helsinki to Trondheim that takes you up through the northern part of Scandinavia would involve at least 6 changes along the way and would cover the course of 2 or 3 days. Such a connection would involve taking a bus from either Kemi or Tornio in Finland to Luleå in Sweden.

For this much travel, you'd likely want to purchase a Eurail Scandinavia Pass, which would cover the ticket costs for travel through Finland, Sweden, and Norway (as well as Denmark), even including the bus from Kemi or Tornio to Luleå.

The Eurail Scandinavia Pass would be purchased here: http://www.raileurope.com/rail-tickets-passes/eurail-scandinavia-pass/index.html.

With the pass, you would only need reservations on your first train out of Helsinki to either Oulu (as part of a connection to Kemi) or Tornio (which also would happen to pass through Oulu en route) and a train from Luleå down to Sundsvall before you cut west over to Trondheim. There would be another train change in Storlein in between Sundsvall and Trondheim. The trains from Sundsvall to Storlein and Storlein to Trondheim are both regional trains that don't accept reservations, so the rail pass is all you would need to board.

To ensure you're taking trains that would all connect (as conveniently as possible) with one another, I would recommend that you call us at 1-800-622-8600. Trains from Luleå to Sundsvall are not able to be reserved on our website and it very well may be the case that the specific train you want out of Helsinki to begin the connection will also not be able to be reserved on our website. However, you can book these reservations and check schedules for the remaining part of the connection by calling us.
