Does the Swiss Pass cover the train from Paris to Basel, Switzerland? Or do I need the France-Switzerland Pass?

Our entire trip is in Switzerland except for the first trip from Paris to Basel. I'm not sure if the Swiss pass will work for the Paris-Basel trip, or if I should get a France-Switzerland pass, or just pay for the Paris-Basel trip separately.

A Swiss Pass actually would not cover the trains between Paris and Basel ('TGV Lyria' trains). If you'll be traveling with a Swiss Pass, you would still need to purchase a regular point-to-point ticket to take the train from Paris to Basel. You would purchase regular tickets by clicking on 'Find Fares & Schedules' on the homepage of our website,

If you happen to purchase a Eurail France-Switzerland Pass instead, you would be eligible to receive a 'Passholder 2' rate on the train between Paris and Basel. To do so, you would click on 'Book your Rail Pass Reservations' on the homepage of our website and indicate the type of rail pass you'll be traveling with when prompted. You would then locate a direct train on the route and click on 'View', listed with the costs that are shown for your preferred departure time.

After you've clicked on 'View', you would then refer to where it says 'Ticket Flexibility'. Underneath 'Ticket Flexibility', you may see 3 options: 'Non Flexible', 'Semi Flexible' and 'Fully Flexible. You would click 'Read More' next to each of these options until you see the fare titled 'TGV Lyria Passholder 2' or something similar. Generally, the Passholder 2 rate for this train would be found under the 'Fully Flexible' option.

Be sure the option labeled 'TGV Lyria Passholder 2' is checked, and then click 'Select' to proceed and add it to your 'Itinerary' (shopping cart).

These trains can be booked once within 90 days of an intended date of departure.

      As of April 2018:

‘Passholder 2’ and ‘Passholder 3’ rates on TGV Lyria trains (Paris-Basel) are no longer valid for travel with Eurail Passes. TGV Lyria now requires that Eurail Passes include all countries being traveled through to be valid.

The 'Passholder 3' rate would now only be valid for travel with a Swiss Travel Pass.
