With a Eurail Global Pass, is there a need for a reservation between Basel & Zurich in Switzerland?

Can you travel on a Eurail Global Pass from Basel Switzerland to Zurich Switzerland without a reservation? Rail Europe website only shows 2 trains both of which need a reservation although the Eurail site shows many trains without the need for a reservation.

    Hi Stuart.

Actually, reservations are not necessary on any of the trains from Basel to Zurich. Therefore, the Eurail Global Pass is all you would need to board.

The 'InterCity Express' trains on this route are the only trains that will even accept reservations. With that being the case, these are the only trains that will display if you indicate that you'll be traveling with a rail pass when you do a search for this route on our site.

Rest assured, there are many more trains on the route. To view schedules for these trains, you would just want to click on 'Find Fares & Schedules' (instead of 'Book your Rail Pass Reservations') on our homepage, enter the route, and not indicate that you'll be traveling with any type of rail pass. If you do indicate that you'll be traveling with a rail pass, the results would only display those 'InterCity Express' on which reservations would be accepted.

Even though there is a note attached to the 'InterCity Express' trains indicating 'Reservation Required', you can rest assured that is actually not the case. Even with regard to these 'InterCity Express' trains, the rail pass is all you would need to board. These trains accept reservations, but they are certainly not required. We apologize for any confusion.

In Switzerland, the vast majority of trains don't even accept reservations, and a rail pass is all passengers would need to board.
