I want to travel from Barcelona, to Villefranche vern, take a short round trip on the little yellow train, and then resume trip to Carcasson on Nov 21, 2017. I understand the yellow train only goes to Odeillo-Font Romeu . How do I do this booking on line for 2?

    Hi Carolyn,

Generally, you can connect up with the Little Yellow Train from Barcelona by taking the Rodalies de Catalunya (R3) to Latour-de-Carol. However, due to track maintenance, the Little Yellow Train will not be operating out of Latour-de-Carol until November 25th. In the meantime, the Little Yellow Train will only be operating between Villefranche-de-Conflent and Font-Romeu-Odeillo-Via (Odeillo).

Therefore, to connect up with the Little Yellow Train before November 25th, you would have to take the France-Spain High Speed from Barcelona to Perpignan, where you would connect to a TER train to Villefranche-de-Conflent. You can then do a round-trip on the Little Yellow Train between Villefranche-de-Conflent and Font-Romeu-Odeillo-Via. Upon your return to Villefranche-de-Conflent, you can then continue on to Carcassonne.

You would purchase tickets by searching a route under 'Find Train Tickets' on the Rail Europe homepage, www.raileurope.com. When purchasing tickets to or from Villefranche-de-Conflent, you would type it as 'Villefranche Vern' ('Villefranche Vern' just being short for 'Villefranche-Vernet-Les-Bains', which is the rail station there). For Font-Romeu-Odeillo-Via, you would just type 'Font Romeu'.

For a trip from Barcelona to Font Romeu, you can just break up your search once in 'Villefranche Vern'. Therefore, you would do one search for the part of the connection from 'Barcelona' to 'Villefranche Vern' and then another search for connecting trains from 'Villefranche Vern' to 'Font Romeu'. When you pull up the results of your Barcelona-Villefranche Vern search, the train change in Perpignan would be reflected.

For your return tickets back to 'Villefranche Vern' on the Little Yellow Train, you would do a search from 'Font Romeu' to 'Villefranche Vern'.

For tickets on the TER back to Perpignan, you would do a search from 'Villefranche Vern' to 'Perpignan'.

A connection from Perpignan to Carcassonne involves changing trains once in Narbonne along the way. For tickets from Perpignan to Carcassonne, it is not necessary to break up your search, so you can just do one search from Perpignan to Carcassonne. For the segment from Perpignan to Narbonne, you would be on either a TER train, a France-Spain High Speed, or a TGV. For the segment from Narbonne to Carcassonne, you could be on either a TER train, a TGV, or an Intercités train.

Fortunately, the portion of the Little Yellow Train between Villefranche-de-Conflent and Font-Romeu-Odeillo-Via does pass through notable stops, such as Mont-Louis-la Cabanasse and Bolquère-Eyne.

  • Thank you. So, just to be clear, the ONLY train between Villefranche Vern and Font Romeu is the Little yellow train, yes??
